Managed to make a bit of progress on the front number plate area.
How it looked when I picked it up on Friday:
With the plate holder removed, there was a lot of junk:
Cleaned up the core areas as best I could (with limited time/products):
Bit better but not great:
Then wrapped the outer edges to mask the holes/scratches:
Still in 2 minds about it, but it will do for now until I either change the grill altogether, or else come up with a different solution (e.g. going back to a standard size plate!)
On the plus side, though, I should get better airflow to the radiator(s) now
