Well... I haven't actually seen the car for about 15 weeks now (it went in for a service and hasn't come back yet!), but decided to polish my old knob as a lockdown job...

The original gear-knob was in a pretty poor state when I bought the car (and hence why I purchased and fitted a brand-new replacement):

Figured I had nothing to lose in trying to refurbish it a bit, so, first soaked it in a mug of boiling water + vinegar to both help soften the glue holding the cap in place, and to loosen/dissolve some of the grime that had built up over 10+ years!
You can see in the mug some of the junk that came off

Few sessions of soaking and scrubbing with a toothbrush (and pushing the cap off, from beneath, with an Allen key), then it was ready for the main job.

It then went through a process of wet & dry sanding (P800 - P1200), polishing (old drill with a few different polishing mops and paste) and then cleaning it up.

The sand/polish/clean process was repeated a few times until I was happy with the result.

It's far from perfect (and would definitely benefit from a new top cap), but looks a lot better than it did before, IMO!

I'll do a proper writeup, at some point, but the R8 is now finally back from spending the majority of 2020 in the workshop.
To celebrate, I created a little collection video, of sorts.
