Hats off to you Jon and Mike you guys on Hi Fi are beyond me, something I never got into. But I'm enjoying this post as it's very educational. I always find when I am doing electrical work I find it hard to get all the parts I need. I'm from an electrical background and understand all this work

Jon_J Stereo Build

Post by Jon_J » Mon Feb 19, 2018 5:33 pm

Ok little more for you. I have been working on the amps. I bought them both second hand and had them serviced at the amp doctor. New capacitors and Mosfets plus some remedial work on the power board to ensure stability. They are old amps now so belt and braces really.

Image

JL Audio 1000/1 v1. I always planned to change the finish on them so the scratches on the top didn’t bother me.

Image

JL Audio 300/4 v1.

I spent a few hours in the garage today and got this far, still a good few hours to go and a whole other amp yet too!

Image

Fairly pleased with the results though, ordered new graphics for them today too.

Nice work again.
Did Gordon make any improvements or tweaks or was it just maintenance?

Do you have an form or in car bass level adjustment? Not sure if your DSP has a front end controller. My Alpine has a front end controller and i think a double press of a button brings up the sub level and i can use the rotary dial to adjust the level on the fly. This is really useful as I love a bit of bass sometimes and some songs are lacking in weight compared to others so it allows me to easily adjust. But as I don't have this fitted in the car at the minute and the (Bose) MMI has no subwoofer level control I dug out my old Phoenix Gold Bass CUBE and installed it last week. I forgot how good this thing is. If you are not familiar with it, it is basically a 1 band parametric eq for sub frequencies. You can select the frequency between 20-110hz then boost it by up to 15db using a knob installed at the front of the car. This gives great control over the sub and allows me to boost those bass weak tunes and really tranforms some songs. But then when I am listening to 'audiophile' tracks I can turn it off or turn it down so it is not overpowering the real music.

Ok today’s update:

Amps are nearly done, I want to spend a little more time on them to get the perfect but whilst I Phaf about installing them this is good enough.

Image

Started the door speakers today. So far both fronts are in and sound deadening applied.

Speakers are Morel Virtus 602 in the front and Morel Maximo in the rear. 6.5 inch driver and separate tweeters with crossovers.

Image

Door stripped

Image

I like silent coat deadening but others prefer something else. They are all similar to be honest. These are a good size to work with, I heat the up with the wife’s hair dryer to make them stickier.

Image

Door skin being covered, I have managed to cover about 85% of the door skin. It makes a big difference, I’ll try a video later of the front doors and back doors so you hear the difference, if it records ok I’ll post it.

Image

Holes in the door covered up, this just helps give the speaker a sealed enclosure to work with. You can’t seal the door completely but I do what I can.

Image

Crossovers installed and wires all connected. The silent coat over the crossovers helps them stay in place as well as reduces and rattling from be casings.

Image

I have left the vapour barrier intact to maintain protection. Glued it back down and refitted the door card.

I’ll do the rears tomorrow.

So I have two ways to do this. The first is an adjustment knob connected to the sub amp, I had this in my last install and just fitted it in the bottom of the ashtray so it was hidden:

Image

The second option (more likely to go with) is a remote for the DSP. It has several programmable functions. You can use it to control bass dB only or you can program it to have different eq maps entirely. This gives you the flexibility to be able to have different EQ maps depending on type of music. Some clever <beep>!
