I've bought the wrong car...

Post by RS4Guy » Fri Jun 30, 2017 2:50 pm

Having reluctantly let the B7 RS4 go, I've decided to get a stop-gap until I know what I want next (probably another RS). My neighbour had a pretty tidy 8N TT that was surplus to his requirements, a deal ensued. I paid £2,500 for a 2003 1.8T 225 with full history, which had brand new tyres and he'd owned and loved for the last 9 years. But, I think I should have bought a V6 instead.

I'm finding that I have to change gears more frequently to keep momentum going, particularly up an incline (spoilt I know by being able to leave the RS4 in 6th and demolish any mountain in its path). With the V6, there should be better delivery of power in any gear at low revs, and with a dsg box, my laziness would be complete. Am i being unfair/unkind to the 1.8. Will I grow to love it or should I just go and get the V6.

Any views/opinions welcome as will probably keep this as a spare car when I eventually go and get what I really want.

Many said the turbos were the better drive, the V6 had too much weight over the front.

This may have been more the mk2

Having said that, my mrs had a mk2 V6 and It was ok

In answer to Simon, not sure yet but maybe a C7 RS6 or another B7 RS4 because they are so good. May even wait to see what the new RS4 Avant will be like. The RS5 has been released already. But I also like the AMG's and like the CLS 63 shooting brake. Pending house move means the big money car has to wait for now.

Going to try a V6 tomorrow and make a decision.

@silverfox. I'll let you know if the 1.8T is soon to be for sale. I don't yet have the V5 back from DVLA! It is black on black, 115k on clock.

Saw an RS5 in the flesh today. It's got a pointy nose and no discerning body work. Underwhelming doesn't come close. Pork GT2RS however.....

the 3.2V6 is much more nose heavy, torque light and thirstier than the 1.8T. Just remap it to 250PS and done

Agreed, the RS5 is disappointing from the YouTube vids. Here's hoping the RS4 version will be better.

@HYFR - The B7 RS4 is a nose heavy car but loved by everyone. I don't think that's a reason not to buy. If I wanted something that was going to handle like a dream, i'd buy a Lotus Exige.

Update - bought a V6 today so the 1.8T is for sale as soon as the V5 arrives.

Aren't the V6s auto only? That's like playing with a hand grenade *after* pulling the pin out. The odds are not in your favour

I'd have just mapped the 1.8, no brainer really.
Hope you enjoy the V6 though.

I've bought the wrong car...

I'm really enjoying my/my mates TT 225 now after a few mods.

What's made the difference:

- Cookbot inserts and poly bushes (reverts the effect of the replacement front arms in the infamous recall that introduced lots of understeer).

- WaK custom remap. WaK is a TT tuning guru who has great knowledge of the 1.8T (based in Croydon but people travel the length of the UK for his maps). Currently at 265bhp (tuned conservatively)

- R32 rear ARB. Stiffens up the rear slightly, again reduces understeer

- Powertrak haldex insert. Goes into the haldex controller and means the haldex goes straight to 50:50 split.

All of the above are relatively cheap and make the car a lot nicer to drive. If you want to spend a bit more, a decent set of coilovers is well worth it too.
