Re: IanH's C6 RS6 900+ spec

Probably not going to be able to afford the head work now - I took the plugs out of the other 3 easily accessible cylinders and checked both the plugs and the bores.

Image

The plugs all looked fine (all the same as this)

Image

I did a quick boroscope of the 3 cylinders and found a "little" amount of shallow scoring on all but nowhere near as much as on the No 1 Cylinder and I also found that all the pistons had that same "missing" section in the piston crown so thats the design of the piston and not an issue in the No1. Here's a few random pics of the other cylinders showing the same "missing bit in the No2 an No4 and showing some of the bore marks and the No 2-3-4 cylinders.

So I cleaned up fouled plug, rebuilt the engine putting the No1 cylinder plug/coilpack into cylinder 3 to see if they were fine and put the working No3 plug/coil into cylinder 1. Started the engine and there is still a misfire on Cylinder 1 (No3 runs fine so plug/coil OK) and, now I've got bore pics from 4 cylinders to compare, it's pretty obvious that the No1 has 1 if not 2 deep scores about 180' apart so I'm fairly sure it's lost compression :(

It gets taken up to Unit20 next week so I'll let Grizz take it apart and see how bad the damage is, cry a little and then prepare my anus for the bank manager/Audi!

Fcuk. Just fcuk.

I've learnt that there aren't many things that'll make a grown man cry but I can so sympathise with this one. Ouch.

Just a quick update after dropping the car off at Unit20 on Friday and having a good old chat with Grizz.

They're going to strip, investigate and rebuild the engine in slow time over the next few months and, depending on the engine cost, I'll get some additional maintenance bits done. I'll post the cause of the failure as soon as I find out but until then thread will probably be pretty quiet.

Great place to have the work done. Few months without the RS though

Well Unit20 are fairly busy but it's mainly cost unfortunately as I won't have a minimum of £10k spare (as a "worst case" repair bill) until I move a whole bunch of things about financially.

That will be one hell of a car once it's had the engine rebuilt and with all the other maintenance stuff which you've done Ian, plus the little extra power very desirable long term keeper is that!!!!!

Have you got yours back now?

Not yet, I've decided to replace virtually everything on the car rather than just rebuild the engine so pretty much just the shell will have 100k+ miles when it gets back which has meant it's been delayed due to money, parts & available ramp time in that order.

In for a penny... you'll have to keep this car now, the pain of knowing someone else getting all that work for peanuts would sting too much. Is there anything tasty that you're doing to this engine, headwork?
IanH755 wrote:

Nope, the £2k+ cost for CNC headwork vs 30-40hp performance increase on stock cams can't really be justified (same with Radtek I/C's etc) when I'd rather spend the money on new DRC, bushes/arms, detailing etc to make the car feel newer than it's 100k+ miles. Although it'll be getting a slight map tweak once the new engine is broken in.

Selling up - I'm genuinely still torn and flip/flop almost daily. My wallet haven't missed it being away (absence hasn't made the heart grow fonder) yet I can't stop myself spending money on improving it (as above) which is utterly stupid if I'm just going to sell it when I get it back. I really can't make a decision until it's back with me plus, as a contractor, things can financially change either way very rapidly which may also have en effect.

I kinda know how you feel. There's such thing as too far.

Paul - Only just noticed your reply. I popped up to see Grizz last weekend and he told me he's going to start the rebuild next Friday so we'll see what happened once the strip down starts.
