Callum's R8 Build Thread

Post by CallumB7 » Thu Jun 06, 2019 10:19 am

Those of you who follow the RS4OC Facebook group might have seen that I recently picked up an R8, I'll be keeping my build thread here.

The car is an immaculate 2010 V10 R8, 19k miles, brilliant red, fine nappa leather interior, bang & olufsen sound system, completely stock, very well looked after.

I was initially unsure how I felt about it, compared to the RS4 its a very different drive, a lot less hand holding, but having had it for a week or so I'm definitely in love with it, will be putting the RS4 up for sale soon because if I don't it will sit there unloved and undriven.

Plans for the R8 are:

-Custom full exhaust w/ 100 cel cats
-MRC Stage 2 remap
-High flow filters
-Wrapping the blades in 4d gloss carbon, the previous owner has wrapped them to make it look like a V10 plus - I'm not a fan of this, I think a car shouldn't pretend to be something it isn't.
-Wrapping the roof in gloss black
-Powder coat wheels in gloss black
-New set of rings and badges in gloss black
-Replace front grille with gloss black mesh

I have a load more ideas but will see how I get on with the above first

Looks good and will be good to see the change. What made you buy this and sell the RS4?

Cheers

I know if I kept the RS4 for much longer I would've charged it, and for the same money I was able to put down a decent deposit on an R8 - seemed like a no brainer when I thought about it like that.

Had it dyno'd this morning. 493bhp at the flywheel. Having used this dyno in the past I know it reads a bit under (approx 20-30bhp), and for a completely stock car with no carbon clean that's pretty good. However, I want to take the figure for what it is for proper before/after comparison, going again on the 27th once it has had an exhaust and stage 2 map.

Had the roof and blades wrapped today. Roof is gloss black, blades are 4d carbon. I much prefer it.

I think carbon wraps normally look pony but that looks really good. If you said it was actual carbon or carbon skinned I wouldn't have questioned it.

So the work has been completed: Stage 2 MRC remap, custom exhaust with 100 cell sports cats, and high flow filters. The difference is amazing, I have to say Chris @ CM Tuning did an amazing job with the exhaust, its perfect. Not too loud, no drone, but much improved over stock and has a really nice growl.

Performance wise I gained 82bhp, taking it to just under 575bhp - bearing in mind it hasn't had a carbon clean yet and is on a low-reading dyno I'm confident its where it should be.

Good man. How you finding it? Are you happy? Does it feel like c.150bhp more than your B7?

Finding it a lot of fun if not a bit scary at times. It definitely feels like 150bhp more, yes. One thing I'm not a huge fan of is how heavy the steering is at low speeds, it's like wrestling a bear. Once she gets a gallop on though you can throw it into corners no problem. Oh and the gearbox is a bit of a learning process, I'm used to how forgiving the rs4 is, unless you get it perfectly snapped into place it'll just spit it out and grind.

The gloss black grille came today so fitted it. Took me about 4 hours all in all, it wasn't a very good fit, but for £400 i think it looks tonnes better than it did.
