Post by quattronutter » Sat May 31, 2008 7:19 pm

has anyone tried petrol/methanol mix?correct mixture should see the octane raised by 5 points ie,95 will become 100 etc..

becareful with that, think parts like fpr and injectors aren't made to run on it, better to run it through your water system. I'm thinking 20% seems like a good balance in water injection to maintain cooling and not run too rich, but I haven't researched it properly yet

difficult finding any hard facts, the correct percentage in petrol should raise octane with no side effects, just not sure on the exact amount...im running 50/50 water meth seems to to the trick

Actually, in America, the brand 76 promote having cleaner fuel by mixing with ethanol and other stuff, to get better fuel economy too. So, it's not a bad idea overall, but then American engines aren't quite the same as ors either.

I've tried it - I've used Tesco 99 for the past 20k miles.

It's made by greenergy and has the following spec:
http://www.greenergy.co.uk/tesco_99_oct ... ation.html

It is up to 3% methanol, 5% ethanol. The max proportions of branched alchohols is even higher.

To quote Greenergy:
How did Greenergy get involved?

The idea to create Tesco 99 Octane first came about when Greenergy MD Andrew Owens’ tried adding 5% bioethanol to the race fuel he was using for rallying to see if it had any impact on performance. The result was higher torque and more power. He also found that the bioethanol was great at cooling the engine charge and causing the inlet temperature to drop remarkably, thus giving the overall effect of having a bigger, more efficient engine in the car
I suspect it's 95 RON with a bunch of blended alcohols taking it up to 99 RON, keeping it cheaper than distilled 97/98 RON.

99 ron is near impossible to find in northamptonshire,i can get 103 octane race fuel with less distance to travel  99 ron tesco special does have quite an improvement on performance

Yeah, but you can follow their recipe! 5% ethanol and they are convinced it would do no harm or they'd reject the risk of a million law suits.

And yes, it gains me about 3.5 degrees of safe igntion advance at peak V.E. Noticable for certain, even over regular 97 unleaded.

I think the effect was rumoured to be over time, but that might just bs I haven't read this topic yet.

sainsbury's have been doing large percentage ethanol too.

I'd only want to put a measured amount of additives in my fuel but how can that be done when they keep changing the content damn

Reset your ecu. Then the effect will be very quick. :) In fact, in my observations alone, it seems to happen quickly without reset.

Quattronutter, I struggle to get double figure advance at peak V.E, but EGTs are low enough and the torque is mental. What sort of numbers are you getting?

good numbers, better than mine, I have to stay retarded over 6000 rpm too - I guess you lowered the CR?

the bikers have been dropping Nitrometahnol R/C aircraft fuel in their tanks for years. My mate had a model shop near a well know street in Newcastle and they sold more of that stuff to people looking to squeeze some more out of their GSXR than they did to model builders!

your ECU should automtically pick up the different conditions associated with a change in fuel otherwise you would have to reset it everytime you had a shortage of VPower or 99Ron
