Shopping list for 400+ BHP

Post by AdamS4 » Fri Apr 25, 2008 6:08 pm

As i'm trying to save for a house at the moment, i want acquire as much as i can over a long (ish) period so not to splash out a huge amount of ££££ in 1 go.

What do i need to break the 400bhp mark. From what i've read i will need:

K04 x2
Bosch 044 Fuel Pump
600cc Injectors x6
Uprated IC('s)
Lowering compression head gasket x2
Phenolic Intake Manifold Spacers x2
Remap

Any think i'm missing from that list ??

Anyone got prices and part numbers for the individual bits required ??

Are the injectors Siemens or Bosch ?

So far i've got:

Gutted RS4 downpipes
Full RS4 exhaust system (Probably get a Miltek)
FMIC

Cheers in advance

If you don't want to throw hundreds of pounds down the drain... please read on.

I wish I had done things differently, I hope you'll take my advice and save yourself some money.

If you're just wanting 400, i'd advise getting some 2nd hand RS4 injectors. They will be fine. A set sold on here not so long ago for £50!

I was using them when I first broke the 400bhp barrier, was talked into getting some 600cc's and yet another remap(you have to if you change injectors), and £700 later I had no noticeable performance improvement and my car doesn't idle smoothly any more.

You won't need a lower compression head gasket, you'll get to 400 without it. I think Spen is running 500bhp on standard compression.

I also fitted phenolic intake manifold spacers. They certainly do something, because the Y-pipe stays coolish even after a long drive, but again, it's something I wish i'd spent on beer. How much can air travelling at 350+ g/s get heated up going through a hot 18" pipe? 1 degree? Took me 20 minutes to grill some chicken last night, radiation isn't the fastest way to heat things up!

Infact to save you more, you will be able to get 400 with the RS4 exhaust. CliveH managed it.

If like me, your prone to throwing your money away because you've read a load of blurb on here, please don't. If you have to spend the money you save on the injectors, gaskets and exhaust on something, I'd say decent manifolds, new lambdas (one of mine mysteriously died when I got RS4 dp's fitted, again at massive cost) or maybe treat the wife to a slap up meal so she doesn't feel like you spend all your money on the car. Money well spent my friend!

Now if you get to 400 and you're still hungry for more... that's a whole different story!!!

Yeah, it sucked. Picked the car up after 3 months in the garage, drove 150 miles home and noticed there was a problem.

Bit annoying because it would have cost me much less to do them both whilst the engine was out, but what can you do?

rs4 injectors are different spray patteren but will start restricting you around 440bhp for that reason, rs4 fuel pump is good for 400bhp no problems

The 'spray pattern issue' was what made me think I needed to upgrade, but it's a load of <beep>. Infact Mihnea posted that the green tops were also not the best spray pattern for 5cyl engines, but that post was deleted by one of the mods rather quickly.

It may not be 'optimal' and you may be losing a couple of bhp, but I noticed absolutely no improvement with 600cc over RS4 injectors. Obviously the 600cc will have a lower duty cycle, but don't think RS4 injectors will get tired!

As for the fuel pump, it will cope at 400bhp and you could do without it, but it's something to consider upgrading in the future to avoid any reliability issues.

I got the Bosch 044 pump, it's really noisy. :(

Would have thought you could do it for much less if you shop around.

If you're willing to take 2nd hand parts, you could probably get all of that for just over a grand. I recently sold a set of unused refurbed K04's and RS4 injectors for £1100.

The labour is the most painful part, but as my mother will tell you, that's always going to be the case.

Remap will cost you circa £500 and I paid approx £1500+vat for an engine pull, getting my manifolds ported and rewelded and all the fluids, etc.

So if you can get some decent 2nd hand parts for a good price, you may be able to get it all done for not too far off £3000.

Defo go for an RS4 clutch. I was lucky and managed to get a virtually brand new one off Grizz.

You will need bigger turbo intake pipes, stick an ad up in Classifieds, i'm sure someone has some hanging round. Remember reading a while back about a tuning firm (APR?) which did K04 conversions, but kept the K03 pipes and it caused problems. Can remember the exact details, but do a search on here and you'll find it.
