Reducing the weight ...

Post by viperbl » Mon Dec 10, 2007 10:16 am

So, I removed some of the interior of my car at the weekend ...

Back seat = 6.5kg
Rear seat backs = 7kg and 17.5kg
Front Seat = 27kg

Saving = 58kg

I hope to change my front seat for bucket, saving 18kg, my battery for a lawnmower one, saving 10kg and remove the air con, saving another est 30kg???

Giving a total saving of 116kg ... should put the car at 1490kg ...

I was sure I felt a difference with the 58kg saving, it did feel a little quicker on the old acceleration so will be interesting to find out what 116kg feels like ...

The only downside is the aircon ... the rest is quite simple and easy to take out (and put back in!) but the air con is going to be a bit of a pain especially with paying to get it recharged!

CF bonnet and boot lid, sunroof (get a CF 'moonroof'), Alu uprights and lighter brakes, strip out all the soundproofing :-)
I reckon you could loose 250kg of these cars pretty easily. Depends on what you want to drive around in on a daily
basis though..

Yep, seen bonnets for around 300 quid plus postage from the states, save about 15kg there and 5kg for the boot lid I think ...

I think when this hillclimb comes up next year I will strip as much of the interior out as I can, I can always put it back, as not sure it will be as nice to drive as a daily driver!!

wow, thats a nice weight ... do you know what it comes in at the moment??

Here is my weight saving list I am working on ...

Lawnmower Battery - 10 kg
One Bucket Seat - 45 kg
Rear Seats - 31 kg (6.5kg base, 7kg small, 17.5kg large)
Lighter Wheels - 8 kg
Flywheel - 6 kg
Air Con Removal - 30 kg
Carbon fibre bonnet - 15 kg ?
Carbon fibre front wings - 3 kg ?
Carbon fibre bootlid - 5 kg ?
Smaller brake kit: - 6 kg ?

Door cards/carpet/roofline - 15 kg ?
Dashboard?!?! - 25 kg

Total Saving - 199 kg

So my weight would be 1606 – 199 = 1407 kg

And that’s extreme!

What plans have you got???

Have a look towards the bottom of the page on this link: http://www.rs246.com/index.php?name=PNp ... c&start=45

Body panels are heavy but strong. If you are going to compete with it, you need a cage, which is heavy but reduces the need for the safety measures designed into the road car.

Most racing cars use lighweight panels & glass and excess weight is cut off the shell.

The underseal weighs 30kg apparently  but you would need to be careful about when & how you used the car then. Not a problem with a track/racing car really.

A single Pole Position and subframe wouldn't weigh half of that I wouldn't think.
You can hold one at arms length with the frame etc without a problem.
Just can't get the smile off my face......

ahh, I get you now with the underseal, oh, prob best stay clear of that ...

Thing is, as much as I want to go far with this, I am trying to stick with stuff I can take in and out without too much bother... I mean, give me 1 hour at the moment and I will have it back to a nice car my mum is happy to sit in!

@Silversea, thats the saving with just having one bucket seat in, my RS4 recaros weight 27kg each, one bucket seat, 9kg, so saving of 45kg ...

@brett, will be interesting to see if you can get it down to that along with keeping the comfort!! As discussed on another thread my caterham (lawnmower) battery seems to work, and I think you can pick them up cheap so even if it does fail sooner than the others it should not work out too much more expensive ... and another 10kg saved!!
