Rods.

Post by spen » Thu Nov 22, 2007 3:53 pm

What options are there as far as replacement conrods for the S4 block?

I am aware of these brands, and here are my thoughts about them:

Arrow - Expensive, look very light, good for high rpm. Look well made, as much as you can tell in picture form.

Pauter - Less expensive. Weird X shaped beam, I've never used a rod like that. Look heavy. Supposed to be able to take extreme loads. Dunno about the high rpm capability - they do look weighty. Pauter are a respected US brand.

Someone from Oz selling sets on ebay. Right materials, good claims, ARP fasteners. No idea if they are any good. He doesn't name the manufacturer. Inexpensive.

Can I post an ebay link here without getting shouted at? The seller is called agropeti.

Does anyone else have experiences they are willing to post regarding aftermarket rods for the S4 block?

Are there any more choices?

Any other insights when chosing rods greatfully recieved!

Cheers

S4 - no longer missing 1 engine. Last seen leaving trailing black lines of gearbox oil.

Do carillo do rods for the rs4/s4?

I think MRC do some but they might be Dahlback. Not sure.

Well you would think so by the price but they seem to do alot for yanks mussel cars which have alot of torque. the thing is you save a little on the price ot the rods but it could cost you more if they fail is it worth the risk

Thanks guys. More names to research. Dummi- why are you down on the pauter's? Hard to call something on looks alone? (though I feel they look heavy, but I don't know it)

Anyone know the weights of the standard rods?

I'm with musty1 of the quality of the rotating assembly - a poor exhaust just breaks. poor rods break everything!

Scat products used quite alot in the aircooled VW world. Sub 10sec 1/4 beetles aren't the sort of <beep> you might be into saf

rate the scats fairly high, lots of high power cars running with them, like mikeyquattro said used in lots of aircooled engines with monster power

its just the structure of the rod i don't like i'm more confident in I or H beam. pauter used to do I beams which had good results and light weight so i don't imagine them making a bad product the X design is not structural as robust as an I beam . though i can see what they are trying to do by reinforcing the weak points at the main and gudgeon with the the meat of the rod and even size through out. i just imagine the same material in a I or H beam being stronger, but they may have done some other design tricks to it. thats just my thoughts as its the first time i've seen them

The 9 sec s4 in poland uses pauter rods he is runing iirc 1000bhp with nos and high reving engine

maybe scat is worth looking into a bit more, I mean £300-£400 for a set of forged rods thats a great price

I am using Auto Verdi rods, they promised 1000 HP and 9000 RPM's "no problem". Those were expensive, but the quality is very good! Rods have also the best ARP bolts.

I had SPMrods, but the big end outer diameter was 83 mm, so it was impossible to install to 81.5 mm bore.
