RS6+ Discs V RS4 B7 Discs

Post by Ads4 » Mon May 14, 2007 8:51 am

Is there a huge difference in the performance of these discs?
I'll be uprating my brakes soon and MRC do the RS6 calipers with either RS6+ discs or RS4 B7 discs (the +discs set up is £150 more).
If performance is on a par then I think the B7 discs are the ones to go for as they are presumably cheaper to replace?
Comments from those with experience of either of these set ups greatly appreciated.
Adam.

I have the RS6+ discs on my RS4 and reckon they are OK. Never having compared them back to back with the B7 RS4 discs I wouldnt know which ones are better for me. From the aesthetic point of view, I prefer the "drilled" look of the RS6+ discs rather than the grooved look of the RS4 B7 ones.

The B7 RS4 discs are drilled, not grooved. I would put B7 discs because those are fully floating.

As far as I remember the RS6 disc's are cheaper than B7 RS4 but when first doing install extra brackets are required for the calipers when fitting RS6 discs so pushes the price up.

RS6 disc gives the best wheel clearance and has curved vains but isn't fully floating.

I've got the B7 RS4 discs Adam - they're definitely drilled (not grooved) - and work great with the RS6 calipers ... I have no complaints.

They have holes but they are cast in, not drilled, there is a big difference :nodder: :biggrin2:

I presume that makes them less prone to cracking around the holes then?

I have had to drill out the holes again twice now, I did not watch them at first and the garage pointed out that because they where full of brake dust, when they get hot, the brake dust will expand more and cause cracking, so, something to keep an eye on...

There is no way that the brake dust expansion in the holes would crack the discs.

Same as that: I've had to poke a screwdriver through all the holes in the discs a couple of times now to clear out the plugs of compounded brake dust ... a PITA ... !

Yep, it makes them far less likely to crack, drilling them creates a 90 degree edge (and surface crack) but the cast in holes are angled.

The discs crack as they are getting thin - well the similar 993tt ones do anyway and when the cracks join or go over the disc edge they are done. I've no experience of the bigger RS6+ & RS4 ones.

Sometimes the holes clear when the discs get very hot, the plugs just fall out. If not, they do need maintenance. I take the wheels off and pressure wash through the holes and down the vanes until the water is clear, then go for a drive to get them hot & dry.

I know the Porsche dealerships drill the dust out as part of servicing, not sure what Audi do on the RS6 & RS4 ? do the holes line up either side of the disc to allow drilling?

Yes they do ... but a drill isn't required; just a small flat-blade screwdriver poked through each hole pushes the plugs out ...
