Brakes or suspension?

Post by DuncS3 » Sun Mar 09, 2003 10:45 pm

What do you guys reckon should be the first out of brakes or suspension to be changed?

All going well I hope to continue doing trackdays, so any mods have this in mind - On the roads I tend to stick to the limits since I did my Drivetrain course

susepnsion would most likely be the GmbH front dampers and springs and rear springs, which is the kit supplied by AMD for the S3 - alledgedly 20mm drop in ride height.

Brakes could be anything from Movits to EBC pads/discs.

chicken or the egg, which comes first?

PS I dont have a major problem with either ATM - but we all love mods!

Tough call. Brakes would make the biggest difference to track I think but actual times would be better improved by suspension. Suspension would be cheaper to do so if money was an issue (isnt it always ) I'd do that rather than do a minor upgrade to brakes then do a fuller upgrade when you realise it's not enough

Most of my trackday probs as standard were with brake fade, so I'd be tempted to go that route first - but like Thorney says, it's all about budget

If you can do both IMHO. All that work is in the same area, save some pennies at the end of the day...

Duncan, if trackdays are your thing, then I would consider just upgrading the brakes - IMO you'll use much more of your brakes than the suspension - your driving style will however dictate this.

I upgraded both because I was getting peed off with the handling on my car - there again, you know how I drive.

Movits: - I couldn't justify their price hence my AMD/EBC choice.
M3 CSL - Silver Grey, a few options.

Brakes will be your biggest inhibitor for tracks (ie you WILL cook them and it WILL shorten your time on the track) so I'd go for these. However suspension WILL make the track more fun

IMO I'd do brakes first. You'll improve your track skills more with instruction.

might be worth having a look here - www.bira.org for brake information. Might be possible to do both after all..........

I would have to say brakes.
Currently my susp is std but handling wise it will stay with
993, 996 porsche and maserati's on track.
I have the 993tt brake set up and would have to give it very high praise indeed.

From Kim Collins website about Movit brakes:

"It is nearly impossible to bring these brakes to their limits. Absolutely no fading!!"

Is that right these brakes will not fade?

Bit of artistic licence there methinks . ALL brakes will fade given the right amount of abuse, its just it will take longer.

Simon, out of interest, have you received any info from Bira in the States regarding the products they offer? Also, have you ordered anything from them? I was interested in this last year but didn't get any more info on prices etc.

At a guess.....no.

That explains some of the cryptic comments recently. Did I mention that HiSpec brakes are high temperature anodised not painted You'd think I was on commission !
