Hard gear change with MTM/Sachs Clutch

Post by viperbl » Sat Jan 27, 2007 6:13 pm

Guys,

Since I have had the new paddle clutch and single mass flywheel installed its been hard to change gear quickly, whereas before I could depress the clutch and move straight into 2nd gear for example (from 1st), now, I need to put pressure on moving to 2nd, (it feels like the clutch is not depressed) but not too much and then after a split second it will allow me to go into 2nd.

This is the same for the other gears as well, and its not a long long time, just too long when you are wanting to move gears quickly.

If I do force it, I get gears crunching ...

With the old RS4 clutch and flywheel I could change gear very quickly, now I need to wait ...

Any ideas anyone?????

Go back to a stock clutch.... Many of the RS4s tried the paddle clutch and went back to stock.

I will need to drop this into the garage to check out I think...

Phil, Even apart from this problem I am very happy with the paddle clutch, it is a little bit of a bitch to drive, and most of my friends do not like it!, lets just say its not the most comfortable ride anymore!, but hey, its much better for spirited driving ...

i got rid of my mtm paddle clutch and went back to oem

even with 520hp and 480lb/ft it works perfectly, no slip and the gearchange and smoothness
are streets ahead of the mtm one.

the oem clutch potentially slips if peak torque goes above about 680nm (500lb/ft)

What pressure plate did you use? If it's an RS4 one, they have a self adjustment mechanism(SAC) which needs setting correctly:

I had the same on my S3. Had a new Sachs clutch plate and found gearchanges hard work. A couple of thou miles on, and it's like it was before. Coming to see Mummy in Union Mills soon, so may see you on the switchback;)

Never had a chance to have it checked before I broke the turbo, but, while the engine is out a perfect chance for the mechanic to have a look at it!

By the looks of things its gonna be months before you will see me back out on the roads in the beast! :(

Having got the car back and playing again with it I have found that gear changes are not easy when the RPM is high, so, redlining a gear for example then trying to select the next gear, it does not want to go in until the RPM has droped ... 4th gear seems to be the worst, in that it crunches with every fast gearchange unless I let the RPM drop before selecting the gear ...

Anyone got any ideas?

Same setup with Sachs paddle clutch and single mass flywheel on an RS4 gearbox ...

may well be 4th synchro not working well enough!
Hope it is not, but what else could it be?

I am thinking it could be something like that (but my knowledge of exactly how the gearbox works is not great), but it could also be a combination of two things, ie, 4th gear synchro, plus some other problem which make selecting any gear at high rpm difficult ??

When I select any of the other gears at high RPM they do not engage straight away, I have to apply pressure and eventually they go on (maybe when the RPM drops enough?? dunno??)

the syncs take time to spin up, that's the wait.
If u override this by force the syncs will get fubared!
U live and learn. Just get a spare and have it spec ed up to the latest p nos. Then swap out and recon the current 1.
Hope that is a solution.

Is there any reason why the new clutch and flywheel setup would cause this to happen?? It only really happened after I had them installed ... with the RS4 clutch and duel mass flywheel it was a quicker change, as far as I can remember ...

Dare I ask if there is a dog box available for our cars?? :P Not that I fully understand about dog boxes, except that there is less or no syncromesh and its more a case of "banging" it into gear???

Edited to add: Or maybe getting a lighter flywheel so the engine speed is reduced quicker? hmm, but if the clutch is disengaging properly, this would not matter???
