Hi Guys,
Does anyone know of any upgrades for the air intercoolers for the RS4 B5, apart from AWE?
Has anyone got the AWE kit, and does it work?
R.

The AWE intercoolers aren't an upgrade for the RS. They are just a similar version that is easier to fit on an S4
You could get a front mount intercooler from the likes of MRC

Sportec do an uprated pair for the RS4, but they are mega bucks. I looked into it last year, but for uprated side mounts the performance increases are marginal ~ 10-15bhp tops!
I have a contact who makes IC's for some of the top rally teams and I know Gordon (FlashyG) is interested in some too, so I might get off my ar$e and sort something out.

Hi Mark,
They quote a larger surface area, which should aid cooling, and hence more power.
The MRC Tuning one looks good value but am concerned with the removal of Air - con fan etc..

The frontal area is less than 10% bigger than the RS4 - they are quoting volume, which incudes depth - surface area is king for IC's!!
I also showed some detailed photos of the build quality of the AWE units to my chap, who wasn't impressed with the way the end caps were directly welded to the core, as in his experience, this could result in a partial blockage of the core where the solder has 'run' during the manufacturing process - take a look at the following photo and you can begin to see what he's on about ...
I have the measurements for the Sportec items and we will use these as the starting point.
I need to get my front bumper resprayed (due to stone chips), so I might get the IC's made up whilst it's off the car.

It's the pipework that make the AWE ones hard to fit on an RS

Be careful ofthe full system, you will need to re-locate the oil intercooler and remove or replace with smaller air-con fans.
Will get back to you on these systems later.
