Cleaned throttle body and TBA => now flies

Post by david7m » Tue Nov 28, 2006 12:08 pm

Hi

A few years ago my car was sluggish and had this tendancy to launch off really quick and the power shut off really abrupt, like someone had crashed into the back :( It turned out to be a filthy throttle body that was sending strange signals to the ECU....

I had it serviced last year and also cleaned the throttle body.

Last weekend I had front and rear pads fitted by a friend who is an ADT. He aslo cleaned the throttle body again and did a TBA.

It now flies  He said it wasn't as dirty as the first time, but definately needed doing. It is suprising how the performance can drop off and you do not notice, especially if you use the car everyday.........

I would definately recommend cleaning the TB and a TBA .....

Enjoy!

Mine was clean last time I looked. I'll be changing the TBB at the same time so will check.

And also important, how can i see if it's dirty?

Is there a "sludge"or something?

And what do we use for cleaning? brake cleaner?
An opinion is like an asshole, everybody has got one.

I'll ring the bloke who did it tomorrow, I think he took a pic the first time. I'll ask him how to do it and what he used to clean it with.

I did this a few weeks ago (TB clean and "proper" TBA) - oil vapour can collect in the TB and condense to form a sludge/little puddle of oil around the entrance to the TB and on the butterfly valve itself.

What i did was:

(1) Take off TBB and clean out the sludge/condensed oil sitting at the bottom of the TB with a cotton bud to soak up the oil and clean most of it out, then finished off with a cotton bud dipped in IPA to remove the residue, then a IPA-soaked cotton bud and VERY light action to clean the oil off the butterfly valve itself: take great care with this bit as you can damage the valve if you touch it with too much force or a heavy hand.
(2) Get the engine warm/operating temp (not hot or cold - go for a reasonable drive to get it warm) so the TB is at operating temp then reset the ecu (unplug it for a minute then reconnect) - then turn the key in the ignition to the penultimate position (i.e. don't start the car) - you will hear the TB adapting itself (whining noise as the butterfly valve actuates) - this can take quite a few seconds - when the TBA is finished (whining noise stopped) then start the car...

Doing this will have cleaned the entry to your TB and completed a "proper" TBA...

Thanks Satan for the guide. I might have a go cleaning it at the spanner share at Woodys... along with the help of the others.
01 RS4, Milltek, Dahlback Racing rears, RS6 fronts and a few bits to be added.

Also, as I hate driving, my toy to play with - a Honda CBR F Sport

Cheers for that, but first....

The TBB is the rubber joining hose between the charged air feed pipes and the throttle body itself - it looks like a pair of rubber pants for an extremely tiny person! (you'll see what i mean when you take it off) The MAP sensor sits on top of it. It's right at the front of the engine in the middle under the front engine cover, between the DVs.

TBA = throttle body adaptation

oh and throttle body adaption is where S4TAN got the rubber pants thingy to adapt to his little ass..and he stuck the MAP sensor in his crack to measure boost after a nite on the curry and guinness... :assflash: when he bends over your,ll see his DV's swingin just by his Y pipe... :bigblink:
