Chip tuning a turbo car
I just got thinking the other day...
How much effort and work do chip tuners put into their programs? I'm not meaning to single any firm out but how much of the stock program are they likely to change? Just the boost pressure?
I know that years ago when I had a Fiat Uno turbo Superchips used to sell their 'Superchip' for it for the same £200 as other chips in their range but it was infact just a £30 bleed valve. All the fuel and timing was still handled by the stock ECU. I notice REVO do a product that you can adjust yourself, the boost and timing. Are these adjustments just putting in across the rev range offsets?
I've heard people mention that once breathing improvements (such as pre-cat removal) are in place the timing can sometimes be advanced. Is this done across the whole rev range or just in certain places?
I wonder if we can workout what's Urban Legend or True??

REVO is a custom remap and can be tailored to any particular car (that they cover), the system allows you to alter the timing and boost control.
If you had either a stock car or one that had a bigger turbo, FMIC etc then the software and person using the software would take those into account.
They also sell various switch boxes so the end user can tweak the software themselves.

I think we've gone a little off track. Revo do a product that can have settings changed by the user. I stand with Minhea thinking it won't be much good if you start changing large parts of the engine such as turbo's. I doubt they allow you to dial in large changes otherwise they would have loads of problems with customers leaving after getting the kit fitted, turning every knob to the max and BANG!

I got the same 8 or 9 years ago with BBR, 300ish quid to chip my 21 Turbo quadra, it turned out to adjust the boost using the cars own solenoid valve. It basically made it full open so bleeding off more air causing more boost and than was it. What a joke, just shows you how a big tuning company can rip people off then go on to warn folks about dodgy bleed valves etc
You can do just about anything you want to your own car nowadays as long as you have a very good knowledge of the combustion engine.
I bought an E manage for my VR4 along with a wideband lambda and some det cans. I was going to do my own map as nobody chipped the VR4. I ended up selling the car so never did it. There is a guy on the VR4 site who has made very good power using E Manage I think he is close to 300ATW. He has done more than just map it, he has big turbos etc etc but all done by himself
I have never looked into chipping the Audi as there is so much availible (MRC) and from what I read our ecu is a nightmare to work out never mind tuning it.

I have a revo set-up on my car which has been running for 18 months now. Initially when done i was impressed and happy with the performance. But the bottom line is that for a car so powerfull a re-map is the best way forward in the long run. Better for the engine as i have been told from other friends who are ex revo audi users, now custom mapped.
Revo isnt a bad option, it is certainly a fast hassel free one. But for the audis s4 - rs4 i would point people in the direction of re-map.
A good re-map, exhaust is good. Plus cats is even better. Sky is the limit. I know as i have the noggy sitting in my garage half dead.

- A remap is the term used to describe a change in ECU code. REVO/MRC/MTM/etc are ALL remaps. It works by changing some of the standard maps to alter the performance of the car (by increasing boost, timing etc).
- A custom remap is one that is done specifically for your car and can potentially take advantage of different hardware components if done correctly.
- The Revo is NOT a custom map...it does however give the option of changing some of the parameters within the map once it is installed.
