ET offsets

Here's one for you :-

I have B6 S4 18" wheels on my S4 which have offset of ET45. In order to clear the RS6 calipers I fitted, I had to fit 10mm wheel spacers.

I picked up some RS4 reps with ET35, thinking that these would be ideal in terms of doing away with the spacers (10mm wider track).

However, the S4 wheels with spacers give the required clearance (about 3mm) whereas the RS4 reps give only about 1mm - too close for comfort.

Other than the obvious possibility of wide tolerances (ie inaccurate) on either the wheels or the spacers, what am I missing??

I think the difference is the wide, are they both 8x18 or 8.5 x 18 ??

Clive its gotta be either inacurrate wheel manufacture or difference in wheel width as HGH states.. my rs6 reps (18/8.5/eta35) only just clear the standard brake calipers ... by a rizla paper ...

Thanks for your input guys.

I forgot to mention that both wheels are 18 x 8J

What you're missing is that nothing in the simple wheel specs (diameter/width/offset) says anything about the shape of the spokes, and hence the clearance between spokes and calipers.

Yep its down to the difference in wheel design too..... for example 256mm brakes will clear in 14 inch BBS ra's but not in 14 inch BBS RMs from memory...... All ET does is make sure it doesnt crew up your handling. I only have 1mm clearance on my calipers too.....

Well the B6 S4 wheels have to stay on for now as the rizla clearance on the others is just too close for my comfort zone, so I'm now left with a set of RS4 replicas (18" x 8J, ET35).

If anyone is interested, they're in pretty good condition - although there are some scuffs aroud the rims, they are not seriously kerbed, bent, or dented.
