EGT and Air Fuel Ratio Gauges

Post by Paulm » Sun Mar 19, 2006 1:36 pm

Anyone ever fitted these gauges?

I was thinking of putting 4 on my front pillar. 2 x AFR off the lambdas (narrow band I know but better then nothing) and 2 x EGT off the probes on the car.

any thoughts appreciated

cheers

why 2? if there was a difference on each side of the engine wouldn't it be quite obvious rather than a balanced change across the engine

Each bank is independent of each other. If one is running lean due to say a blocked injector you would see the AFR lean off and the EGT rise but only on one bank.

I intend to just link into what is already on the car. which is 2 lambdas and 2 EGTs

I don't think you can read the stock EGT sensors, they put out a PWM 0-5v signal that ranges from 945 to 1035 degrees C. The issue could be the impedance of the display you'll be using and whether it will affect what the ECU reads off the sensors or not...

I'll be installing K-Type thermocouples in each downpipe in my own car, they don't cost too much and aren't that hard to install... I've been using for over 3 years this guy's (http://www.smods.de.vu) EGT gauges and thermocouples for mapping purposes, they've always worked a treat and nothing ever went wrong with them. Now I have no idea where I'll install the displays in my car, I don't want it too look like it came out of the fast and the furious, yet I want to have dual WBO2/EGT/pre-post IC boost and intake temp gauges on it.... maybe a separate display that can fold into the glove box???

yeah same problem! if they are thin lcd type guages how about putting them in your sunvisor , i've done that with my sat nav and haven't had any regrets in 2 years much easier than having them in some far obscure place when you want them

good links just reading through with google language, Mihnea i will be bringing my car to you at some point i will have time to put it back together in april should be good to go after then

looks like the SMOD would need just a tap n die to for the 8mm x 1mm thread , simply screw bung into tap and wire up to display is that right?

how easy is the display to read? does it give relative voltages through different materials that are easy to translate?

if its that easy i will put my order down for one

Yeah that does help Mihnea. I was hoping some one would know about the EGTs as i had no idea if i could link into them or not. Oh well another wee job turning into something bigger 8)

@dummi: the SMOD displays the temperature in degrees C. The display isn't very thin, probably 20-30mm if memory serves (the 2 ones that I have are bolted into a display box that I use for tuning so can't get them out just now)...

HTH,

Mihnea

PS: ideally you need 2x thermocouples and 2x type D SMODS on a 2.7T so you can check the temperature on each bank separately. I'd put them in the downpipe flanges so you don't run the risk of the sensor melting and going through the turbine if you put it in the exhaust manifold...

thanks Mihnea , easy enough to read then , will give it a shot, i'm thinking about making a panel between the driver and centre console to hold them

have fitted a wide band air/fuel gauge to my S4 now. excellent bit of kit. you only need one gauge. tapped it into the exhaust before the main box.
