Its bacteria build up on the evaporater in behind the dashboard. It can lead to all sorts of illnesses. One of the best products is made by Wynns. You can buy the DIY type products that dont work all that well. Or take it to an AC place and they should have a decent tool for the job. At work we use the Wynns product. It used in an Ultrasonic type tool. The tool is actually approved by VAG and wynns worked with VAG when developing it.

It doesnt matter if you leave the AC on all year. You still turn it off when the engine is stopped!!
I take it thats Gordon!! Hello mate
The cost of the tool is about 100+ quid and the fluid is about 20 quid or so. We charge about 30+vat for the treatment to be carried out

Doesn't leaving it on make your car sluggish and labour when ticking over?

Im in Somerset!!! The modern Audi compressors run at variable outputs. It does it more good than bad to leave it on all the time. When you use WOT the compressor output is turned down to very low.
It actually uses the same amount of extra fuel by opening the windows on a hot day as it does to use the AC!! The extra wind resistance makes that much difference.
