Porsche 993 Turbo S front brake discs

How long should brake discs last with normal road use?

Mine are about two and a half years old and have a lip on the edge, although only about 1mm.

as long as there are no cracks that join, and the brake pads can reach the disc you should be fine.

Thanks JR. I need to take my car to an Audi dealer to get my washer pump problem fixed and replace the brake fluid, but want to leave all other work until my next service with AmD.

I just hope that the Audi tech can handle bleeding an S4 with Porsche brakes...

mine have 2 years and 4mm on the edge... will have to change...you didnt take some hard breaks if you have only 1mm...

Yes I agree, I do not use the brakes much, I try to use engine braking in normal driving, and with the traffic we get here I don't get much chance to drive so I need to brake hard!

I find it interesting to watch some drivers who seem to brake on EVERY corner, whether they need to or not!

let us know how you get on Dippy.

mines up for its 2 yr brake fluid change this year, (i run 993 bi turbo 4 pots) and im not sure if to let audi do it(wayside) or Amd.

as for disc's, amds porsche guy seemed to think that i would feel "run out" ie warping, when they are knackered.

mine are cracked in the holes, as are micks, duncs etc's. and he said it wasnt a problem.


I swapped my pads, at 22K ish, where were well and truely knackered, but i cant see the discs seeing another set of pads

hmmm just remembered, audi use some sort of bleeding system, and waste removal for use with its DOT 4. systems.

Ive got a funny feeling they wont contaminate it with DOT 5.1 that i run.

probably will be an Amd job afterall.

there are minimum thickness values given for the porsche disks. I can't get to my tech manuals at the moment (in storage), but try ringing a porker dealer to ask.
As for cracks around the holes (ohh err!) they all do this. The holes should be chamfered to help reduce this, but it doesn't eliminate it altogether. All the disks on my 993 have this, as do all the other cars I know of.

I blow out all the cross-drilled holes with an air line following a track day, to help keep the disks in good order.

There is nothing magical about bleeding the calipers as long as they remember to bleed BOTH SIDES of them !
Why not buy an easi-bleed from halfords and do the brakes yourself ?
It is a 30 minute job to do all 4 wheels. I do mine myself and just make a note of it in the service book when I did it.

Thanks Paul. I'm taking my car to Martins in Basingstoke - one of the better dealers. I told the service advisor that it does not have Audi front brakes, and she said that it would be no problem. That suggests that she actually knows something about cars! The worst that should happen is that they will refuse to do the change. (Actually there are worse scenarios so I'm glad I have booked a courtesy car).

John, I take your point, but I've never done this job before so it would take me longer. I've always had a rule that I would get a 'professional' to service my brakes because they are safety-related. Anyway I am less inclined to do 'real' work on my car anymore (I even considered booking an oil change too but changed my mind - that would be too lazy of me!).

Regarding my original point, it was just a question of if I used a dealer or went to AmD for the brake fluid change (which really needs to be done now). I'd like to leave the rest of the brake service (pads and disks if required) until my next AmD service (in the Summer in order to coincide with needing it's first MOT). I'm now happy that my pads & disks will last at least until then.

I've heard that Martins have lost the franchise from April, anybody else know about this, I'm sure Simon has heard something as well
I've also slipped into the pay somebody else to do routine things that I could/ought to do myself, my excuse is age and more disposable income - what's your excuse :D
