Excellent write-up on a mod for the S4 after-run pump

Been looking for this for ages now - seems like someone's already done it. This mod basically replaces the sensor switch that operates the pump which circulates water around the turbo casing after the engine is switched off. You won't nornally hear this operating unless you track your car. This is basically on OEM turbo timer - gotta be a must do mod for any S4.

great find Nige thanks. seems to be a far simpler method than fitting a turbo timer..

Yes - I did this for my car ages ago. I even posted the details on this site...

Dippy, must've missed that one - I asked the question not so long ago here and the only response I got was from Dan and his wiring mod to force it into after-run mode.

Any downsides ? i.e. does it affect the alarm system ??

That's the theory - difficult to prove though - all I know is that is costs less than £20 and will reduce temperatures around the turbo housing for 10mins after shutdown.

correct me if i'm wrong Dippy, but your method involves cutting wires and using other bits whereas Nige's solution involves just replacing the actual sensor with one which switches the pump on at a lower water temp. Seems logical to me - anyone tried this yet??

which method is best or do they both achieve the same results but one with more effort?

I fitted mine over the weeknd - 5 minute job - cuts in now after a hard run - doesn't seem to affect the factory alarm system or anything - good mod IMHO.

This alternative temperature switch was fitted to my RS4 this weekend - it works a treat and certainly helps to cool the oil temp quicker too. The pump and radiator fan do indeed activate after turning off the engine, but I've noticed the following:

1. After normal (pottering around town) type driving, there is about a minutes delay before the pump and fan starts up after turning off the ignition. I presume that the underbonnet temps have then risen sufficiently which then causes the new switch to activate.

2. If the car has had a good blast beforehand, then it comes on straight away after turning off the ignition.

Thanks for digging out the info Nige.

Your S4 didn't last long!

any one considering this mod should be aware that there is an updated metal clip (to replace the plastic clip fitted to earlier cars)
