Feedback needed on this race car

Post by kiwi_mtm » Mon Apr 26, 2004 7:33 am

Factory built Peugeot 306si 6 speed race car 1996

http://www.trademe.co.nz/structure/list ... 852926.htm

I'm looking for a NZ Targa Car (open road tarmac rallying(no gravel!)). I have No idea what these cars are like, especially since its non stock factory race car spec. All I want is a well balanced 1st race car.

What do you guys think ?

Any links where I can get more info on this car ?

It sounds like a 306 GTi6 to me, as that was the only one to have both a 2litre engine, and a 6 speed box.
The engines on these are highly tuned and many of the parts are not common with the rest of the range, so pricey.
The gearbox is longer than the standard 5 speed boxes, so seriously limits lock to the left.

They are a quick car for what they are, and pretty light.
I couldn't say what would be a better or cheaper option though.

I think if I was looking for a cheap tarmac car I'd probably think about a Seat Leon Cupra R,
or an Ibiza. Both are 1.8T engines, can be tuned up beyond 300bhp, and are pretty reliable.

All depends on what your after, what your budget is, what is/isnot allowed in the class, etc.

Happy hunting, and be sure to let us know what you decide ;)

Cheers,
John.

what about a scooby, should be cheep as chips over in NZ & everything has been done before - so lots of off the shelf mods to prepare the car with. That way, if you are just starting out the car can grow with you as you get more experience at competing.

Alternatively, in the UK it's a good idea to joing your local motor club & buy a second hand competitive car from someone.

Yep, all good advice there mate.

I guess both a scooby and a Mitsubishi would be good options.
Like I say, all depends on your budget really.

This 306 is producing over 200hp, has a Peugeot Sport Close ratio 6 Speed with LSD, race spec fully adjustable suspension, seam welded, factory crash cage thats almost a work of art, AP ?Pots up front, Carbon Seats, Rally com'+distance kit, fire Ex, etc. NZ $15,000 (or less as its neg)

Yes, for the same money I could get a reasonable WRX, but I'll need to double the price by the time I crash cage it, brakes, engine recond, etc. And every prick has one.

The alternative is a Skyline R32 GTR which is already setup as a Tarmac Rally car. $30k asking. 400hp reliable.

I'm thinking of tyhe 306 as I can spend $15k, have some fun, crash it, dont be concerned, and then once i've got some skills, get a real car.
