Optimax vs. Ultimate

Post by GlynRS2 » Sat Jan 31, 2004 9:34 am

Having been slightly confused by the claims made about these new performance fuels I thought I would do a bit of web browsing. Found this interesting link . Not sure if I am any clearer on the issue now.
Certainly my RS2 goes better on either Shell Optimax or BP Ultimate than normal unleaded, and seems to give better economy (of course that is all very relative in an RS2 ).
I know some claim to have noticed a lot of variability between fills of Optimax, but I can't say I have ever noticed. As the two closest filling stations to me are BP & Shell and price their fuels identically I guess I will just fill up at which ever one I am passing at the time.

Glyn,

It is confusing - I have always used Optimax and Millers, but the nearest Shell garage is like a 20 minute round trip, whereas I have a BP garage selling Ultimate 2 minutes from my house.

At the moment I am filling up with Ultimate and Millers because I cannot be arsed to drive to the Shell garage!
(and of course I havent noticed yet any difference on two tankfulls)

Hmmm Well i been experimenting for the last month or so with BP Ultimate, and whilst it does state its the same as Optimax, it certainly isnt in my car, I have run BP for the last 2 weeks soley, and decided to put optimax back in as we now have it in town
My god what a difference , i got the punch back in the midrange and she flies on the stuff, perhaps my car is used to have the optimax in it, but i dont think i will go back to BP.
Cheers

John, I had the same experience when trying different fuels and will stick with Optimax for my RS.

Sorry to disagree, but i find Optimax to be totally overrated. I've used it for extended periods in my S4 and found it to be nowhere near as good as BP Ultimate or Supe Unleaded from other sources. I've even tried comparing it to Super from my local Sainsbury's and found the Super is still better.

I totally agree. Optimax is so bad for the enviroment, the Australian Goverment I read were going to ban it due to really bad carsogenics found in the petrol..

I've tested both side by side with Mobil 1 8000 as well and found BP Ultimate to give me at least 100km MORE than a tank of Optimax and about a extra 200!!! than Mobil 8000

BP Ultimate was shown in a study to be the cleanest burning 98RON fuel available down here (We only have Ultimate, Optimax & Mobil 1 8000)

Definately go Ultimate, its better for the enviroment at the very least!!

Well Ultimate is only 97RON here, and Mobil are part of the BP group IIRC.
I've been using Optimax since it came out and have found nothing better

I cant tell the difference to be honest. I could never tell the difference when I switched to Millers either!

Millers definately made mine more lively.

been tunning without for a while now untill i have the custom remap, as i dont want it mapped to millers. At least that way i can stop using it if i wish.

You don't get mapped to Millers. The only thing that a remap could do is increase the potential of ignition advance for a higher octane fuel.

If your ECU can advance for a higher octane then it will run smoother and can actually increase performance. If you then use a lower grade, the knock detectors will simply make the ECU <beep> and you will lose performance. Then when you go back to higher octane it will advance again. The only problem is how long it takes to get back.

On the BP Ultimate question I am sure that it is only 97 RON. I've also been experimenting between Optimax and Sainsbury's and there is NO DOUBT in my mind that Optimax makes my engine run smoother. The performance advantage is only slight, but the smoothness is enough advantage for me.

so Dippy,

you saying i will not suffer any problems, if i get the car remapped (AmD RR) while running millers ?

ie if i decide to stop using millers in the future?

Im running AmD modifed code at the moment, and car will be Remapped on the rollers shortly.

Paul, I will be very interested to see any differences between your AMD car as it is now and when it has the more 'Generic' remap. Any chance you can get AMD to explain what they will change (timing etc)?

we never did get round to that logging!

its got generic/modified code, now and will eventually be custom mapped on the rollers, to fine tune/tweak it further.

Paul - I dont think that AMD map to a specific fuel do they? like APR and REVO do. Ie no 98 RON programme. I would imagine that all Millers will do is give you better results on your dyno graphs, because if they map just for Millers, they would have to either map your timing outside of safety levels for it to be a problem (obviously they dont do this) or offer a switchable map for different fuels - right?
