limp mode... help needed!?

Post by TsRS4 » Sun Jan 18, 2004 7:27 pm

Hi all, I need your help..

Here it is: When I start the car in the morning, it drives normal (boost wise) then after about 5 minutes it looks like it goes into "limp mode" and starts to drive lacking some of the boost (no EPC light though!). It lacks power. Than say 5-10 minutes after it goes into limp mode, it starts to drive normally back again and stays normal afterwards. If I park and stop the engine for some time during the day, and then start the engine, same thing happens again but without the "normal" phase before the limp mode (car goes directly into limp mode and goes back to normal after 5-10 mins).

I bought this car a few days ago and I think this should not be normal right?

I do not have the VAG-COM but I think this has something to do with the cats and temperature sensor. What do you think?

Oh, by the way; I parked the car today when I came home and before stopping the engine I put my hand close to the exhaust tips and realized that the gas leaving the exhaust felt quite hot to me. It might be normal but I just wanted to you to know...

I don't think your car is actually in limp mode mate because the only way you'd be able to reset the ECU is to clear the fault codes using VAG COM or in some cases turning off the engine can clear it.

If I had to guess I'd say you have a sticking or damaged DV.

But don't take any chances - get the car to a reputable tuner like AmD or QST for an evaluation and rectification of the problem.

Doesn't sound very good at all. Probably be best to get it to any dealer (pref as Joshie says to AmD and alike) as something this serious is bound to throw up something when hooked up to the diagnostics.
Where did you get the car from?

All the best,

Ben

Just a guess, but possibly dodgy MAF connections? Or MAF on it's way out? Either way a diag at AMD\Audi or Vag-com should be able to tell you.

Agreed - I don't think it is limp mode (BTW AFAIK the engine light does not come on for intermittent faults).

Let us know where you are as many of us here have VAG-COM.

I took it to the dealer. It came out to be a bad temp sensor on the left bank. They ordered the part and they'll replace it next week. This is I guess the same thing that happened to Dippy before, right?

The car is in Turkey, so which one of you is willing to share his VAG-COM with me?

Thanks anyway you guys.

Actually I have a very intermittent fault with a pre-cat sensor. It only caused limp mode once and that was over a year ago. AmD couldn't find a problem so I just live with it.
