Uprated brakes

Post by wazza » Thu Dec 04, 2003 4:33 pm

What has the Starship Enterprise and S4 brakes got in common?
..... They both go into warp mode quickly

So, now I've found out the hard way that whatever you do with the standard discs on the S4 they are a load of <beep> , what are my options?
I want this like a run down of all the available kits that can be purchased.

Porsche
Movit
AP
Nige_S4*
Jeff Wiltshire* (Hi-Spec)
Brembo?
Any other specialists I should hunt down?

Of course there are different choices within those manufacturers too.

I need them on the car for the next year and a half (30-40k miles) and don't want to be spending thousands, but I want them to work both on road and track
I need lower overall costs on replacement discs/pads too (i.e. they need to last if they cost more).

I'm going to do a search of the site tonight and put up all of the ones covered.

If they need larger wheel sizes (stnd 17") then I'll be remortgaging the house that I don't have

* Nige and Jeff - sorry I can't remember the makes you had fitted currently

stoptech appear to have a good reputation.

One thing to note though is that you'll need some calipers produced for the road if you don't want to be cleaning them all the time. eg Porsche calipers have integral dust shields which the off the shelf brembo's don't - no doubt some of the others will have a similar problem. It's not a major issue, but like coilovers, if you don't clean them, they'll get manky & be no fun

All of the grear you mentioned above are good though. Just go with something proven & by the look of things wave bye bye to the thick end of £1500-2k

Exactly.
Seems like I've wasted about £500 since July though, so it doesn't sound too bad now.

if you are buying brand new for your car weight then I'd consider the Porsche 996 monobloc kit from maybe QST or AMD. Also don't forget the brake fluid - i boiled mine at Oulton so my next immediate mod is to upgrade to dot 5.1 fluid done via a power bleeder..
M3 CSL - Silver Grey, a few options.

I've got Castrol SRF thanks Si, and I didn't have any problems with fade , just the bloody warp vibration.
You'll have to listen to the video to hear how bad.

Paul, after 18 months of trying this, that and the other, I've got what I consider to be a good combination of fast-road/occasional track setup using the original calipers(without spending £1000's).

I put a pair of DBA slotted and drilled on the front mated with pagid fast road pads (harder compound than std Pagid fast road material) with OEM disk and Pagid fast road pads on the back. Fluid is SRF equivalent from the US.

I have to say that at long last I have the brakes I expected from the S4 from day one. I didn't get any fade, vibration, noise at Oulton (although it has to be said that I wasn't caning them, as I have only just got my confidence back after many hair-raising moments with previous setups, but I did 10 laps at one stage in the morning without anything undue happening). I am mightily impressed by the improved pedal feel of this setup .

How much ?? not too bad actually, about the same as OEM stuff

Let me know if you want more info.

I had problems even with the 993 set up, you do need to go for the right pad and fluid to get everything working.
SRF fluid is IMHO the best.
For the pads I now use Performance Friction Carbon metalics pads, they are excellent for the track, absolutly no degradation in the brakes at all at oulton park, goodwood or castle coombe. However they are terrible on the road as they squeal like a stuck pig.
I use Porsche OEM for the road.

Tarox have released an S4 specific disc for about £250. They waranty it against warpage (although admit they'll skim it FOC if it does) and claim that its much stronger than OEM. Combined with Pagid pads, should be a good mod...

Both Nige S4 & Simon where passengers in my Car with the HiSpec brakes so they will be able to comment on how effective they where.....

I had no fade or warping so job done....Approx £1200 fitted.

DBA? is that Disc Brakes Australia?
