Right so who has what? and why?

The options I know of are (for the RS4, so i assume the same goes for S4, not sure on S3 and others)

Tanoga
UCC
Stratmosphere

Why do people rate the UCC one a better item than the tanoga?

Note to Carl - just trying to get your improved

Well I'd be interested to know. I've got the Stratmosphere one in mine but understand that this is just a copy of one of the others?

from my understanding the stratmosphere one is a copy of tanoga's

however alot of guys say UCC is the best as the bottom bearing is a ball bearing rather than a nylon insert

also some offer differnt ratios, not sure who's, definitely the UCC

Carl, please comment

First of all I have never had a UUC or Stratmosphere RS4/S4 short shifter in my hands.
What I can say is that Stratmosphere did at one time supply the Tanoga shifter.
The bottom bearing in the Tanoga shifter is an Oilite bushing with a precision ground inner steel sleeve.
The bottom bearing never rotates by more than about 30 degrees and as such does not need a needle roller bearing.
A short shifter is designed to reduce the amount a travel needed to change gear. Tanoga take the view that a reduction of 20% is of no value and as such do not offer the veriable adjustment and if we did we would only be coping a competitors design. UUC and Stratmosphere both offer this veriable adjustment.

I have only been made aware of two people who have had some sort of issue with the Tanoga shifter, yourself and JR(correct me if I am wrong on this John).
Bushy, you contacted me the day after you had AMD fit a Tanoga short shifter due to the fact that you missed a gear change and was concerned about the instalation. I told you it was down to the adjustment. Did you relay that message to AMD? What was their responce? What shifter are you running with at the moment? (stock or short shifter/brand?)
Has Scott returned from Holiday?

JR, I beleive you are running the UUC shifter with the Titanium gear knob. Is this correct? Did you change because you wanted the additional gear knob or was there a problem with the Tanoga short shifter?

If there is anyone out there who has any issues or questions regarding the Tanoga short shifter please post and I will reply.

Thanks for your reply, i fitted my short shift at around 12,000miles and initially had a problem selecting 3rd, i spoke to you as you indicated and relayed the problem to Scott who called it back in and adjusted it, superb, I have had no problems with the shifter at all. However i did have a new gearbox under warranty at 38,000 miles which was a synchromesh problem in 2nd. At this time i removed my short shift in case Adui thought this had caused the problem. Scott advised me to run the gearbox for a couple of weeks to make sure everthing was hunky dorey. - Done

So at present i am using standard shift but would like to get the short shift back, however i nticed play in the bottom bearing and wondered if this could have helped the synchromesh problem.

My dilhema is refit or get a new one. So i have tried JRs and he must have his set at 40 degrees as the movenet is very slick and short. UUC - tempted!

However I feel obliged to speak to you Carl as i know you will resolve any issues i have and then if people want the 40 degree shift and you offer it, it should help your sales.

As you are a fellow owner i think thatrs all i need to say.

So once you recieve my shift you can look at it and decide if in fact there is a problem or not!
Has Scott returned from Holiday?

No, mid next week i think????

I believe John felt the shifter was an improvement but not sure why exactly and he has a dumpy knob - alledgedly

Err here it is straight from the donkeys gob
I had a Tanoga fitted incorrectly by my local Audi garage, and it was very notchy, it was then very kindly replace by Kim Collins via Tanoga (thanks Karl) After that the shifter was fine...... Until i tried a UUC on fitted in another RS4, and i cant remember whos it was, but i did prefer it, Karls shifter is great... ive never said any different... in fact i recommended it to many people.... the UUC is much more expensive and with a Titanium knob , very outragously expensive... but its my indulgence and i like nice things... nothing wrong with that.
Cheers

You also had that huge carbon fibre knob. Sure it added nearly 2" in height to the Tanoga setup......

Right latest update

I collected my old shift from AmD today

It is in fact not the bottoom bearing that has worn it is the aluminium section that it is boltd through, maybe this needs an insert

I looked at the Stratmosphere one which is blatantly a copy of the tanoga and believe it will have the same defect

Carl i have posted it to you, i am hoping you can repair and possibly, please fit it at Monday's meet

Bushy
I have a theory as to what has caused the problem you discribe, but I need to look at it to be certain.
Whatever the outcome, be it defect or incorrect instalation, I will replace it foc and if we can make the arrangements I will fit it into your car.
I don't know if I can do it on the 3rd, if not then I am sure I could do it at the rolling road meet on the 5th.
