Porsche Brakes
On a recent MOT, the tester pointed out that my porsche discs are begining to crack around the drilled holes.

Obviously I need to replace these but as I'm a bit of an ignoramous (sp?) I would like to know what Porsche model these discs come from. They are the standard upgrade that places like QST,AMD etc. sell as after market upgrades.
Just wanna start searching around for the cheapest genuine items available....
Thanx

Re: Porsche Brakes
Mick,
there is nothing wrong with those disks mate.
You have to start worrying when the cracks between holes start to join up, or you get real bad vibration on heavy braking (due to uneven expansion).
btw even undrilled disks will develop cracks like those.
Whatever you do ensure that any replacement disks you buy have chamfers around the holes. OE porsche disks have these, but some after market ones don't. Doesn't look like your disks do either.
These chamfers help to stop these cracks appearing, but they still appear eventually.
From what I remember Tarox Black Diamond disks are also chamfered.
Apart from that ,be sure that you blow out all the holes following a serious driving session, as dust buildup will block these holes and in some cases will leak to brake fade (had this happen on the 993 while back at a track day. Most unexpected ).
Cheers,

Re: Porsche Brakes
Thanks for the reply John.
The MOT tester said that if they had been any worse then he would have failed the car.
As far as I was concerned the discs I have were OEM Porsche items. Allthough I did buy them second hand.
I was after doing some research into where I could scource the new discs from hence the question as to if anyone knew what Porsche model they are likely to have come from originally...
I will get around to getting the dust out of the holes one day

Re: Porsche Brakes
Hey Mick, i think your discs are the standard Porsche 993 twin turbo ones (part number I have from mine is 993.351.045.10)
The discs are two piece (ie disc and bell) but you can reuse the bell 'Once' only - afterwhich you have to replace them really.
IIRC Type 911 offer genuine discs cheaper than a porsche parts dept.

Re: Porsche Brakes
Nice one SiTaS3
Just what I was looking for.
£118 +VAT each
Ah well. One of the joys of owning a modded car I suppose.
Thanks

Re: Porsche Brakes
Hi Mick,
Just recently I replaced my Porsche discs for exactly the same reason although mine were much worse.
I note the price from Type 911 but be aware that AmD's prices fitted are not much more - that's why I let AmD carry out the work.

Nice Pic Mick !
MOT tester
Ian and Simon are spot on, no problem until they join.
Not heard of the need to swap the bells though, I though you just needed to swap the bolts (can't remember what they are called) which join the discs and bells. Could be wrong, I often am.

Re: Porsche Brakes
Mick,
if you find they are genuine 993 turbo disks I'd give Gert at www.carnewal.com a go for prices.
I buy pretty much all my porsche stuff from him and his prices are very keen.

Re: Porsche Brakes
I think that the AmD price was around £370 fitted for replacement discs(£125 each + labour+ vat) something that I had to enquire about recently as you already know

Hi David,
my recommendation for swapping the bells comes from some advice from the Movit North American distributor regarding the swapping of brake bells for these disc types. I'll be taking no chances!
Very informative page on the process: How To Swap Brake Bells

Bump.
I might be replacing my Porker Disc's then...
I get noises after harsch braking, particularly when throwning it around corners.....

RE: Re: Porsche Brakes
Mine had cracks like above, but no problem at MOT. Nor where they making any noises, but I decided to get new disks anyway. Wow what a difference!

RE: Re: Porsche Brakes
Virtually two years to the day after he posted! Gotta be some kinda record!
I've just changed my disks and nearly went for drilled but I've heard more and more stories lately about cracking. I've therefore gone for groved only. Fingers crossed.

RE: Re: Porsche Brakes
that was a bit of a fluke wasn't it!
not intended, i was looking for Sita's link to the changing of the hats. Though its been pulled.
Simons given me a couple of ideas i might try first.
namely wheels off, brakes disc clean, retorque all the wheel bolts, and i might whip the pads out and try retro fitting the anti squeal shims, as well as cleaning up the pad runners.
discs have done 35K miles ish
pads on second set, only done 14K ish
