Can't access gear linkage on 98 s4 avant.

Hi guys, I'm trying to fit a short shift kit and can't get the trim removed that is around the gear gator. On later models the whole things comes off but I can't get mine out to acces the gear linkage etc to fit the kit. Any help appreciated. Thanks.
