All those running 20" wheels

Post by N11LS_J » Sun Sep 04, 2016 3:15 am

Mainly Fellow B7 owners, for those of you who ran/run 20" wheels, I'm assuming the favoured 255 width tyre is the 255/30/20?

Anyone run 255/35/20?

I'm curious to know how much extra sidewall you get, and what issues with the taller profile

The 35 profile is tempting me for 3 reasons

+ better pot hole protection
* better ride comfort
* higher load rating 97Y as apposed to 92Y on the 255/30

Nils
Without going into a tyre calculator, won't the profile height of 255/35 be the same as 265/30?
If so, I'm pretty sure you've run this size before. I've had 255/30 and 265/30 on the B7 and couldn't tell the difference other than the amount of clearance and overall height.

Nils, it a B8 not B7, but lots of info from Jaygemson on Audi SRS who runs 20s with 255/35s.

Perfect thanks guys

Mike, yeah the profile would be very similar, my issue with the 265 was the width, as I'm on air, the slight increase in height won't be a problem

I just didn't want the 35 profile to look too chunky!!

Cheers for the links Ian, helps me out :beerchug:

As Mike says, looks quite good to me too, unless the picture is making it better than it was

Clearance isn't a problem as stated, as mines on air suspension, I just don't want it to look too 'chunky' as normal drive height

Oooooh and another bonus, the 255/35 are a fair bit cheaper than the 255/30s!

Weird

Nils, my guess about sizes earlier was not accurate.
The diameter of standard size tyres (255/35/19) is 661mm (same for 255/30/20).
265/30/20 go up to 667mm. This is the size I said I couldn't feel any difference.
255/35/20 goes up to 686.5mm so quite a big jump. I see why Rick said he could feel it now. But that is one of the reasons you want to change right? To make it more comfy? Not sure how noticeable it will be to look at though.

Ahhhh thanks for the detailed info Mike

Well, I'm just toying with the idea of 35 profile, the 255/30 don't offer much protection and you also feel every imperfection in our amazingly silky smooth (NOT) UK Roads, so wondering if going up to 255/35 would be slightly better in terms of comfort without compromising the car aesthetically

Hmm maybe an idea to get a hold of a worn cheap 255/35 and slap them on to see for myself

Pah, comfort, sheeeeeeeet am I getting old?!

I think the problem is the air ride. I have compliments on the ride in mine running bilsteins.

I just don't get air. Why raise it up to drop it at a show? Mine rides like that and stays like that no issues.

Sorry not an air hate post lol

The tyre choice will help too as I needed them quick all they could get were Bridgestone s and they had a massive rim protector . Gone for mich psst now and they look great

:biggrin3:

Fair enough Rick

Air suspension isn't to everyone's taste, for me, I've been on bilstein coilovers, and I prefer air as I love the comfort it provides along with the flexibility

I don't really do shows, in fact I've done more shows whilst I was on coilovers!!

Zero whilst I've had air!!

Cheers for the info on tyres :beerchug:
