Does more Octane = more Oomph!

This is presumably important with the high output engines. The bog standard 1.8T drinks 95Ron, is there any benefit to be gained by using higher octane fuel? Am I being negligent in looking after my baby?

Here's an experiment for you.... For the next 2-4 tanks of fuel, use Optimax (Shell). You should notice a difference.

Then you will probably think to yourself, 'this is nice I wonder what Optimax and Millers would be like...... '

I'm now on my third tank of Optimax and its a different car, feels much quicker and certainly more responsive. I presume the ECU's anti-knock sensors detect less 'knocking' and advances the ignition accordingly - would this be correct? And if I add Millers to Optimax will it make any difference or does the advantage 'peak out' at a certain Octane level?

Good news, far cheaper than any physical tuning.

The ECU re-calibrates itself based on the quality of fuel, advancing the timing as appropriate and therefore more power and better responsiveness.

Millers should be another step up again, theoretically similar to what you have achieved already by changing to Optimax.

Good luck.

How wonderful! Better get some millers then and have a go! One wonders why this fact isn't mentioned by the fuel companies (their blurb isn't particularly believable) or even Audi?

Thanks for the answer - a nice interim measure whilst i'm saving up for a visit to AMD!

My availability:
- in italy
95 ron unleaded
Shell V Power ( 99 Ron , developped on Ferrari F1 experience )
- in Switzerland ( I live just 10 km far from border )
98 Ron Superplus ( like your Optimax I think )

My point of view :
- big difference between italian 95 and Shell VPover
- reasonable difference between italian 95 and Superplus
- little bit more power also from Vpover in comparison with Superplus

My choice :
always VPower
