RE: Re: RE: BP102 ultimate
I think the ECU can only advance and <beep> the timing by a maximum of about 12 degrees.. or so I remember being told. if you put in 102 fuel, the timing will be advanced as far as the map has allowed the ECU to push it. If you had the car re-mapped specifically for that fuel you may get more advance still, but you could also run into problems if you ever needed to run the car back on 95 as the ECU may not be able to pull back the timing enough as it only has a limited 'window' to move the timing within.

Great post! much as I was thinking but wasn't sure enough to post. That's why a switchable map would be so cool. Assuming that's accurate ?MarkB wrote:Great post! much as I was thinking but wasn't sure enough to post. That's why a switchable map would be so cool. All well and good - but that explanation doesn't discount, or disprove, that the ecu would advance the timing a few more points (than normal) if some 102 were put in the tank ...
... I still reckon it's worth a punt - to re-iterate: someone has tried the 102 (Doc W), posted up about it, and categorically stated that he felt a real and marked performance improvement ... isn't that enough? What are people saying here?: ... that he didn't????!!!!

I agree S4TAN. I also have some experience of it but will keep my powder dry for now
RE: Re: RE: Re: RE: BP102 ultimate
I'm not saying he didn't. I'm saying he could have got better if remapped for the fuel. but then the risk of map not being able to take more normal fuel.
Lets hope MRC take an interest in this thread.

Don't linger on that fence too long David ... I hear that splinters in the rectum can be very painful!I also have some experience of it but will keep my powder dry for now
In essence I guess my point is this: a guy tries the 102 stuff, has the decency to inform us all on the forum (assumedly for fellow members benefit) that the performance improvement was marked and noticeable (bearing in mind, by his own admission, that he doesn't really notice any difference between 95,97,99 etc - relatively speaking then this makes the difference he observed with 102 even more marked) - then folk come along and cast doubt over the veracity of the claim! Vexing to say the least ...
P.S. - this is not aimed at you Mark ...

Yeh Yeh, I'll get my coat...S4TAN wrote:P.S. - this is not aimed at you Mark ...
Slightly off topic. My car is running really poor timing at the moment and I don't see the knock sensors pulling the timing back at all. I wonder if it would run better on 95?

Thats Ok, Im thick skinned
But I still think 'people' should try it for themselves before saying its a waste of money.

I 'personaly' would want a massive gain for the money spent. The car costs me about £2 for every 10 miles covered. This would go up to about £6 for 10 miles. I'd want them to be fun miles for that price!dr_wimpkins wrote:should try it for themselves before saying its a waste of money.
Second ECU (or switchable map) for a track day then yes. a good mod
All in my cheap skate opinion

I would also ask anyone who is thinking of dropping some this in their motor to get some decent and relevant logs for the rest of us...I would stick £100 in but our only BP station in Swindon (that I know of) has closed down...

RE: Re: RE: Re: RE: BP102 ultimate
it is not possible for the ECU to advance the timing more than the map permits it to.
I would guess that most tuning companies will set the map so that the timing can move forwards a bit from the normal fuel used, but backwards more for safety reasons. I would be fairly confused if my car (which is not a track/race only car) was mapped to run 98 as an absolute minimum, although it would leave more forward advance possible for better fuels, anything less than this (dodgy batch of fuel, adverse weather conditions etc) would cause the car to start knocking.
I am not 100% sure on this, so il research now, it is just how I understood what doug was telling me when he was mapping my car.
for example if you get your car mapped on 98 fuel, and there is infact a 12degree window in which the ECU is able to <beep>/advance the timing, then it would make sense to set the timing somewhere around the 8degree mark leaving the ECU the option to push timing forward by 4degrees should the situation arise, or back by 8 degrees if poor or lower octane fuel or weather conditions are present.

RE: Re: RE: Re: RE: BP102 ultimate
Heres a question....
If you were to put some sort of race fuel in your mapped car, would you expect much better performance, or only as much as the map allows?

I am not doubting that dr wimpkins has noticed a performance boost from his fuel swap, infact im extremely glad he did for the extra money! I was just trying to help explain why this might be, and also that it might not be as big a gain as possible if the car was mapped on this fuel....just incase comments were aimed in my direction
re race fuel, I thought that 102 oct was race fuel?
