Times have obviously changed. Shame though, the reason i initially started going to AMD is because of all the good things i heard about them from various members on this and other forums.
Dippy, out of interest are your H&Rs comfort coilovers, if they are how much did they lower your car?
Prices quoted on AMD website??

RE: Prices quoted on AMD website??
I am surmising that the main benefits of a free flow exhaust system are improved spoolup and improved volumetric efficiency, particularly
at high rpms. I can't think of a reason why this would require a remap (then again, I ama software engineer not a tuner). Anybody care to explain?

Jon, when the engine breathes better at the top end, the fuelling needs to be adjusted accordingly, because the ECU doesn't have enough adaptation margin to self-adjust the fuelling.
the other thing is that a less restrictive exhaust will also drop backpressure, which means the turbos can run more boost with less strain on them, so basically boost can actually be increased at the top end in order to gain a little more HPs.
Also, lower backpressure at the same boost levels basically means the engine can actually run less fuel and more ignition timing with the lower exhaust gas temperatures... it's all a matter of tuning philosophy here and usually not everyone does the same as the others...
HTH,
Mihnea

great explanation! thats all the more reason for me to get on to AMD to ask them to do this for me! If it can be done then it should be as far as im concerned. It would seem silly to not take advantage.

...and finally, just to make it clear, I did feel a significant difference between stage I map with full Miltek, and the stage II map. Basically before the remap I had more power, but delivery felt 'rough' and it tailed off a bit at the top end. After the remap it was much smoother and there was no tailing off. Based on this, what I was told at the time and what Mihnea has written, I am 100% convinced that a remap IS required to get the best out of a free-flow cat system.
Sash,
If AmD are resistant, I suggest you offer to pay something towards the cost of the RR time, because IMO it will be worth it.
I don't know which flavour of coilovers I have, but I don't think they're the comfort ones. Don't they do 3 types? If so mine are the 'middle' ones I think. Lowering is significant. Take a look at http://www.dpe.org.uk/cars/images/5-4.jpg (before) and http://www.dpe.org.uk/cars/images/5-13.jpg (after). Sorry about the quality of the photos (they are scanned), I must get around to taking som decent digital ones sometime.

I think Dippy is right about the sucess and size of AmD now compared to four + years ago. In turn this often leads to less personal service, something I enjoyed before. AmD used to look after my 80 Sport and there were often Golfs there as well but i'm sure these vehicles are no longer catered for. I am not suggesting that their expertise is any less, indeed it may be much wider now than previously - it's just different ! AmD's overheads now must be much much greater than at Oddington !!
