Porsche Brakes - minimum pad thickness

Post by Dippy » Mon Mar 17, 2003 4:45 pm

After reading Joshie's last post this one might seem a bit penny-pinching, but since I'm still unemployed I need to keep my expenditure to a minimum.

So the question is - what is the minimum pad thickness for the Porsche brakes. Like Joshie I have the 993 biturbo brakes, but I assume the spec is probably similar for all Porsche brakes.

I have done a web search and have found 2mm stated on a few sites, but I'd appreciate a more solid answer (anyone have a Porsche maintenance manual?) if possible.

Cheers,
Dave

Just got a new set today - the maximum thicknes is 1cm so you can work out how long yours have lasted and plan accordingly Dave.

Thanks for the offer but AFAIK you should never put used pads onto a different car. Not sure why - maybe someone else does.

Thanks Ian. I've done 8,000 miles to take them down by 2-3mm, so that suggests:
1) I drive like a granny :-(
2) I've got lots of miles left on them :-)

No Probs Mate,
Usually it is not recommended as the pads waers to the shape of the disc.
to be honest IMHO the fact that we use drilled discs will 'shave' the pads into shave pretty quick.

And yes you must drive like a granny

Don't think its your driving Dave - I belt around roundabout city with all that braking and I think I have about 4 mm left after about 6000 miles. I just think that the pads wear really well but I don't want any problems at CC hence the £75 investment in a new set

Only Kidding Dave

I,ve checkied with my collegue who runs a Porsche 996, advice to him was 2mm was the limit for everday driving.
Personally I would change earlier as you will not get many stops before the pad material gets very hot due to there being less material to dissapate the heat.

Indeed I will change before 2mm, I just needed to know roughly how long before I have to change them.

As soon as I'm back in work (fingers crossed as I have a few interviews coming up), I'm going to treat my car to a full service and a new set of boots!

Bushy - even if I drive flat-out, I'll still be driving like a granny compared to you!
