Brake pads

Post by Bushy » Wed Mar 12, 2003 8:16 am

Following a recent thread i have written I have decided to start a thread on pads.

see here

So who knows the difference between standard pads and green stuff/red stuff etc etc

I would like to know which is the best pad to use in my car so properties that are important are
 • Amount of dust
 • Hard or soft compound
 • Noise (if this is relevent?)
 • Wear on discs

I think the amount of dust is a minor concern as i have protected my rims with wheelwax and clean them regularly

Hard/soft compound - Now i have a view on this that means i prefer softer compounds. The reason is i had Pagid yellows on the GMBH discs and they were outstanding in braking but they effectively held the heat and ultimately gave extreme wear to the disc and finally caused it to crack.

Anyone else think this?

I feel that regular changing of pads, say every 5000 miles with an oil change will help my discs and car last a bit longer, especially as i do drive it quite hard

I welcome other comments

And Andy now is the time to share your maintenance tips to us
Can't beat a bit of boost!

My understanding with brake pads is that their friction is measured by a coefficient of friction rating. The higher the coefficient, the more friction the pad has (therefore, can we assume that the disc will wear out greater with pads having a higher coefficient like greenstuffs??).

Most pad manufacturers quote this figure for both cold and warm operation, as well as the temperature range for pad effectiveness.

More info available Here

I try and use a light emery cloth/paper to rub the crap off my brake discs every month. I'll be doing this before Castle Coombe.

I'd appreciate knowing what the best way to deglaze pads is though..
M3 CSL - Silver Grey, a few options.
