Rattle in Milltek tail pipes

Post by Brisel » Thu Jun 02, 2011 9:51 pm

My Milltek tail pipes are rattling - the mesh is loose.

What does the mesh do? I assume that it is for noise reduction.

What can I do to stop it moving around? Is it covered under any kind of warranty?

The exhaust was fitted by MRC for the previous owner. MRC isn't exactly just up the road from me.

Milltek is a life time warranty for the owner, so you will not be covered. However im sure you can "bluff" it somehow.

Is your system valved? It has been reported that the valves can rattle at cold start.

It's not the valves, not that the exhaust has any apart from the turbo wastegates - The nice man at Kwik Fit put a gloved hand on the mesh inside the tail pipe and lo, it stopped rattling!

I was talking to Mr Milltek yesterday and the warranty must be executed via the retailer. I guess if you might be able to find a friendly retailer close by and pay costs (Fitting etc...) instead of petrol going to MRC? Worth a try :)

Are the Milltek exhausts stamped with a serial number?

If not buy a new one and send the old back with the new ones receipt in a few weeks. Then when a new warranty replacement one comes back you can give it to me for free :jump_clap:

On a serious note as I'm debating buying a Milltek exhaust are these prone to issues or is this just an unlucky one off?

I'm probably not the best person to comment as I have only had 2 Milltek systems on 2 cars but that has been over 5 years...

My previous one was a resonated cat back system on a 3.2 litre V6 VW Golf R32 & I had no troubles with it whatsoever, in fact it reduced the booming at 2000 rpm considerably over the OEM one.

No problems really with Millteks at all, other than clamps loosening/blowing occasionally.

Basically I give them a big thumbs up - long lasting metalwork & great engine noise producers without much noise or boom getting into the cabin.
