Optimum Gear Change

Post by david7m » Mon Jan 26, 2004 9:05 pm

When is the best time to change gear?

On the APR performance graphs, max power is at 5,500 rpm, is this the best time to change gear? The limiter is about 7,200 rpm, is this the best time?

Its a combination/playoff of max power in your current gear, and also max power with the next gear. Look at a dyno chart for your engine and work out equal opposites from the peak power band by volume under the line. You'll prob' need to run past your peak power as a playoff for getting more power immediately once you've changed up.

I had this issue on my A4, with power drop off after 5k rpm. No such prob on the RS4, its just keeps climbing until cutoff!
