Milltek , nice sound outside but inside awful

Post by BigAustin » Sun Oct 04, 2009 2:21 pm

just tried a non-resonated catback milltek on my B6 S4 tiptronic.

Now outside it is an awesome sound. see attached

Inside it sounds very boomy, and bloody annoying at 1800-2000 rpm.
which sadly equates to around 45-60 mph, so when in traffic its there.

If you hold 1800rpm in neutral, you can actually feel an offbeat vibration from the engine, which obviously translates to noise when you are moving.
but only at that rpm. try it and see.

I guess the non-res pipes are suited to manual cars and not auto`s. ?

I am selling the cat-back, http://www.rs246.com/index.php?name=PNp ... ac562c5060
but I guess it would be better suited to a manual car ?

also on my standard exhaust , there are vacuum operated flaps on the backboxes are these only on auto`s ?.
I have looked under an B6 cab which was manual and they aren`t there. why have the autos got `em ?

It`ll be back to the standard exhaust for me, unless someones got a pair of resonated pipes and want`s a swap ?

The valved system on the b7rs4 is a cracking idea,i can tone it down around town or when i have passengers, not sure if its avail for the s4. I always spend a day or so fitting extra sound deadening to the boot area to help cut down the boom,i also do the doors for an increased THUNK when closing and a sharper stereo, ive found dynamat the best

I`ve also been told by my local exhaust builder that you can have results by wrapping the pipes with heat wrap.

Don` t think I`ll bother though. as its expensive stuff and may not work.

According to him its because its stainless and it has different harmonic properties to mild steel which he uses.

Had the same on the RS6 - non-res was just too intrusive into the cabin. Spoke to Milltek and got hold of a set of resonated pipes which are much better for me and make the car usable as a daily drive, while still giving a bit of a grunt when opened up :-)

Keep your eyes peeled, you never know when/if someone will have a spare set....

yep, thats what I have gathered, people with autos are advised to fit the resonated pipes.

Its either sell this set as it is, or get the resonated pipes. Its whatever comes first.

this happened to me recently, just had silenced centre section pipes fitted and makes a huge difference. Personally if I had the choice Id ditch it all together and go back to standard. waste of 800 odd quid.

I cant even sell my unsilenced pipes so what chance I have of selling the cat back set up!!

Grizz still has my standard exhaust cat back if anyone wants to return thiers to standard. ( B6 S4 CABRIO TIP)
