Engine control questions

All,

I want to know more about how all the stuff under the bonnet gets controlled, specifically what goes on in the electronic part. I know all the theory up until electronic management units showed up on the scene...

How do these ECUs work? Are they even called ECUs in Audis? How upgradeable are they? Can their mappings be changed while running without causing problems? Can I extract enough information from the ODBII interface to completely reproduce the information on the dashboard?

And.. of course, the ultimate question - How much does the stuff I need to buy to get going actually cost?

Welcome Rik,

As for extraction of information via OBD2, VAGCOM will read (and even log and graph) all the information from the dashboard and lots more...

Thanks. I actually have a project that involves hooking up to the OBD2 port, and staying there. Unfortunately, this makes, for example, a REVO SPS hard to use, and taking the car for service maybe be awkward too...

Suggestions?
