lightened oem flywheel...?
RE: lightened oem flywheel...?
thats a good idea but would it sort out the rattle of a single mass
light weight dual mass seems a bad idea if it were to break up due to less material

RE: lightened oem flywheel...?
Im not so sure on how the dual mass flywheel works, need to see it theory of it, is it offset or are the weights opposed...? better still I have a spare in the shed hanging around... will look tomorrow .. but if you stuck a larger front damper on, its not going to be as big as the flywheel of course!!!!! - so less rotational mass to slow or speed up but with a larger damper it will soak up some crank rattle, but its the weight of the flywheel that stops that... so not all gone i rekon
RE: lightened oem flywheel...?
i thought it was the gearbox that rattled not the crank.?

RE: lightened oem flywheel...?
Any dual mass wheel is designed to take up slack. Hardness or aggression will kill it, being gentle will wear it. When it goes get a lightened one if you don't want the comfort and expense of oem dual mass. New clutch should be matched to fly, u cant match a dual mass to a new clutch so both should be replaced when worn, sad but true. So after your car gets older or out of warranty you can make it even better.

Thx for that Flashyg - Okay I got the theory side of it now .... found a little snippet on Dual Mass Flywheels if anyones interested ........ hell of alot more info available, but this keeps it simple ...

RE: lightened oem flywheel...?
so we conclude high powered motors,, 600+hp the dual mass will fail? are there any working examples of cars this powerful still using dual mass

Another source explaining Dual mass flywheels.

interestingly at the end it says its ill advised to replace a Dual mass fly-wheel with a single mass due to the increased drivetrain noise and possible tranmission failure.

RE: lightened oem flywheel...?
it doesn't support its claim possible transmission failure
RE: lightened oem flywheel...?
Basically it is saying a well designed and correctly operating DMF will absorb more vibrations resulting in a longerlife for the gearbox. However conversley the opposite is also true a badly desined or poorly operating DMF will have detrimental effects on the gearbox. Lightening a DMF will change its vibration absorption, I personally went with a LWFW...

RE: lightened oem flywheel...?
Mihnea has almost completely convinced me to go with light weight flywheel i probably will,, i would like to know from people generally, as i have not actually been inside a car travelling with a lightweight flywheel, what it is like in city centres, motorways, traffic jams,,, opinions are welcome
