i had a new gearbox under warranty

basically the synchromesh between 1st and 2nd gears failed and eventually i only had 3rd and 6th to drive with

I assume this is a known fault as they had 6 gearboxes in the UK parts centre, which seems high bearing in mind we only have 400-500 cars in the UK

I seem to remember that there as a similar problem with the early S2 (?), although I thought it was a bearing problem. For those with almost unlimited cash I believe that shot peening parts strengthens the surface, probably marginal in some cases but the bean counters at Audi ( and anywhere else) are not going to sanction such additional costs with substantial price increases to cover. However if YOU are having to pay it may be worth enquiring...... any mechanical / metalurgy engineers out there who can confirm ?

well we get 3 years or 60,000 mile warranty here, so it was under that

not sure how it actually works with Audi

Well after brutally shoving 600Nm of torque through my S4 box at Santa Pod and Elvington doing standing quarter mile runs I couldn't really complain if I twisted the input shaft.

Mine was not replaced under warranty as the warranty had expired

But I am hoping that the gearbox should be able to cope with normal hard driving provided that there are no repetitions of aggressive repeated standing starts.

Is the RS4 box the same as the one on the TT 225?

NO, it's not. It can't be as TT's engine is positioned differently.

the problem on the S2 was down to a weak 1st gear on the 6 speed box where it wasnt wide enough to transmit the torque, later down the line it was made identical to the RS2 box.
