Action vs Audi AG ? Recall 20DB

Post by Jefecito » Sat Feb 09, 2019 8:47 pm

Hi,
I'm a prefacelift RS3 owner from Morocco and last september the "nightmare started".
On september 12th, car was idling for a moment and I started smelling gas only to get out of the car and find a huge fuel leak behind the right tyre.
Couldn't even start the car, driving was atrocious so I decided to call my insurance to have it transported to the dealership.
Car was out of warranty, 3 years old at the time.

I've emailed Audi AG to let them know about the issue, sent pictures to make them aware of the risks (I'm quite lucky there was no spark or cigarette at the moment otherwise the car and myself would have catched fire).

They replied saying they are taking care of the issue with my local dealer and took my personal details to contact me.

This was on September 18th.
It took the dealership a month to get the fuel pump electronic modules shipped from Germany and made me pay over 1300 euros for the repair. Of course, no courtesy car, or anything like that. Customer care they say ..
On september 25th, 10 days after my first email to Audi AG, a worlwide recall for fuel pump electronics was issued under number 20DB.
Coincidence ? It might be ...

Any thoughts on what I should do ?

Your query is incomplete.
1. Why are you asking now as it’s Feb 19?
2. What has your supporting Dealership said?
3. Is the recall actually related to your failure?
4. Have you contacted Audi AG?

I can’t help you but others on here may do but the above information might help form an opinion.

1. Why are you asking now as it’s Feb 19?
Because I've just found out online that there's an official recall for the fuel pump electronic modules that came out 13 days after what happened to me

2. What has your supporting Dealership said?
The dealership basically say that they do what Audi AG ask them to, which is in my case place an order for the modules and install them on the car

3. Is the recall actually related to your failure ?

That's why I finished my post with "it might be a coicidence".
As far as I know, they changed the very components that are now required under recall number 20DB (4M0906093N for fuel pump controller and 8V0919087A for fuel supply module)

4. Have you contacted Audi AG?

I contacted Audi AG even before taking the car to the dealership because I needed them to know about the risks involved.
The only reply I've ever had from them is basically "give us your personal details so we can have your local Audi dealership call you and we'll handle that with them".
My guess is that they kept my car there, did some testing and came up with their conclusons regarding a potential issue for cars from the same year. And they made me pay the bill without me even having a courtesy car for 5 weeks (because parts take 3 to 4 weeks to arrive to us from Gemany) . :kissmyrings:
I've emailed them again today ...

Ok well.

1. If it was an “official recall” did you not get a world wide generic recall letter yourself?

2. Have you been in contact with your dealership since you found out about the recall?

3. Do you know for a fact you have indeed have the upgraded items fitted on your car. Because it would have to be a re-engineered units which would require quite a bit if time to produce and test before they would have sent new upgraded parts for you. To me it this part doesn’t sound quite right.

4. It be best to wait for this reply.

I've never got any letter from Audi AG or my dealership, maybe Morocco is excluded from that kind of communication procedures.
I found out today and I'll be heading to my dealership on Monday to have some explanation.
The part numbers I gave on my previous post are taken from the invoice they gave me 4 months ago.
As far as I know, there was a TPI regarding the fuel pump controller 4M0906093N since February 2017 (TPI number 2046963/1). Basically they changed the component only when a failure occured between february 2017 and september 2018.
The change to that specific component became a recall, so mandatory, a few days after what happened to me.

Yet again, it might be a coincidence, but that whole thing sounds strange to me.

Why would an electronic fuel pump controller cause a fuel leak? Doesn’t that take some break, a physical hole, or loose hose?
