Tyre replacement for RS2

Post by TWARD » Wed Jul 25, 2012 2:14 pm

Hi, I have read some of the discussions regarding tyre choices and am confused by the recommendations for 225 vs. 245 tyres. I do not do track days and am looking for a tyre that will give good all around performance i.e. decent roadholding, not too noisy, give a reasonable ride :blackrs4: and long mileage. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Hi, Thanks for your reply. I have re-read the various comments but cannot find an explanation as to the benefits of fitting 225/45's over the factory recommended 245/40's; would you be so kind as to enlighten me or direct me to an answer? Also, some of the comments seem to be quite old and I wonder if there aren't more modern, better options. My black RS2 has been chipped to 374 BHP and has had the aircraft aluminium rear suspension mounts fitted but I don't know if that would alter your (or others) recommendations. Thanks for your help. Regards, Tom :blackrs4:

If you read up on the OEM Dunlop supplied, it's said the measurements are much closer to a 225/45; it was a bit of an oddball. Some have fitted them with no issues, read up on s2forum for a lot more info on these cars.

I ran 225/45 Toyo T1Rs on my s2 avant based replica with no issues, not great on wear but price made up for it. On my 'real' RS2, it came fitted with Eagle F1 225/45 and I now have Goodyear Assymetric II 225/45 and I'm impressed. I'm running about 420-440hp, they have no problem getting power to the ground come rain or shine, she gets driven pretty hard but wear looks reasonable after about 4k miles on them. I'm killing the fronts but they should do me 12k, rears probably double that.

The answer is relatively simple - the old OEM Dunlop SP8000 was a tyre specifically developed by Dunlop for the RS2. It was marked as 245/40ZR17 but the actually size was more or less exactly 225 width. The tyre had specially strengthened tyrewalls to cope with the weight of the RS2 and it's ability to reach 163 mph. These tyres are no longer available.
Modern 245/40 ZR17 tyres are built to the correct 245 section width and are therfore 2cm wider. AFAIK no tyre manufacturer produces a 245/40ZR17 tyre that is safe to run on the RS2 7" rims. So you have no choice but to fit 225/45 tyres.

In terms of specific tyres in 225/45 ZR17 fitment, I run Michelin Pilot Sport 3 in 225/45ZR17 94Y fitment - they suit the RS2 and work very well on the car. GTRS runs the same tyre but in 91Y rating.

Hi, Many thanks for the lucid explanation. While writing, I will want to refurbish the wheels before installing new tyres but a couple are oxidised; I have a vague recollection that once oxidised, the wheels cannot be properly refurbished but would be greatful for any advice. I would agree with what Scilly has said already re sizing.

I am running Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetrics on mine and I think they are the business to be honest. I've had Pilot Sports on an E36 M3 Evo and they weren't bad at all but I have to say the F1s are the best trye I've had on any car so far. Probably not harmed by the incredible traction you get from the Quattro though :boots:

Welcome to the club TW, there are some 'lifers' on here I believe, Vas and Scilly. Plus Al Wyn who ain't too shabby either when it comes to RS2 knowledge :sekret:

You will never regret buying an RS2, believe me, they are addictive.

I also fitted Michelin Pilot Sport 3 in 225/45ZR17 94Y from the recommendations on here.

Next job is full brake system refresh, so heading down the factory big brake route!
