Thumping and Groaning

I asked this on S2Forum, but I'll ask here too...
Recently I've been having a bit of a 'thump' when engaging and disengaging the clutch, especially in the lower gears. It almost as if there is some movement in the drivetrain somewhere. It makes navigating around town difficult, as I have to be veeerrryyy slow and precise with the clutch action to be smooth. As well as this, I've been having groaning/graunching noise which seems to come from the rear when maneuvering on a tight lock, usually at low speed.
S2forum guys said it was typical signs of a worn rear diff mount, but MidlandVW have said the mount is fine, and there's no movement around there at all. They said that noises like that were 'normal' for a car of this age and not to worry...but its more the gearchanges/clutch that annoys me, mainly because you have to make such a concious effort when changing gear to avoid kangerooing or thumping.
Suggestions? Is it really a matter or TADTS, or a is there something amiss?
