Fuel Tank Sender Problem

Hi,

Have been suffering from a problem where the fuel gauge never indcates below 2/3 full, even when empty but will show full when full..

I suspected that the float on the tank sender might be obstructed as I seemed to experience this problem after a new fuel pump was fitted.

Rmoved the cap on the tank at the weekend and did not see any problem, the level arm looked OK to me...., poked around at the contacts on the slider and put it all back, now with a full tank it shows just half full !

Does anybody know the part number for a new sender ? How is it connected to the side of the tank ? Is there a diagram of the routing of the cables & pipes in the tank so that I can make sure it is all as it should be..

there is no details on it in the RS2 workshop manual so I assume it will be covered in the manual for aother model, anybody knowwhich one ???

Appreciate any help.

Thanks

PAUL

I had a similar problem and just replaced the sender itself and all was cured. Quite a simple job as I managed it myself!

Thanks for the encouragement...

How does the sender attach to the tank, is it a clip or fixing of som sort ?

Where did you gt the part, dealer ?

Thanks

Paul you might be able to help me as I need to remove the fuel pump from the tank as the car has been parked up for over a year so when I’ve tried to start it the fuel pump fuse is blowing.

I don’t want to damage the large notched plastic cap so did you use a special tool to remove and was it easy?

Gaz :(

Gaz,

There is a special tool but I used a piece of wood and a mallett to unscrew it...... came off quite easily. The tricky bit is getting it back on, there is a rubber gasket which needs to seat perfectly or you will get fumes in the car or even a bad leak when the tank is ful. It tookl me a couple of goes to get it right. It helps to put some vaseline on the threads of the cap as it can be dry and stiff....

Good luck

Seems like this is a common problem that occurs when the car reaches the grand old age of 15.

I currently have the same issue, but to be fair it has been the case for the last 2 years, I just haven't got round to sorting it out.

One thing to remember is that the capacity of the fuel tank is 61 litres, my 'empty' warning on the computer comes on usually when I estimated that there is still 8 litres in the tank (when this comes on I fill up and generally I put 53-54 litres in there).

At this poin my fuel gauge still shows 1/4 full so it appears that neither is right! I also have a new sender but have yet o gt round to fitting it. I bought mine from a guy on FleaBay, take a look on there.

Thanks Paul, Went to remove it with loads of tools but not needed as it un-screwed very easily, I can see the fuel pump in a plastic cage but how do I remove it as I don’t see any fixing screws etc.

I would say this is the original pump as I've had the car for nearly 12 years REG “M 80 RSâ€

I have never personally change the fuel pump but, I believe it is a push fit into the plastic cage, I dont remember any signs of any fixings on the fuel pumps I have seen, they are just a metal cylinder.... Have you had a look on the internet for a photograph or picture, its amazing what is out there. Even ebay (german ebay too) can give some good pictures

I had my fuel pump changed for the first time at about 160,000 miles, it is now at 196,000 and still puills like a train..

Good luck..
