Thanks to everyone who has posted in the past on tyres - I got all the answers I needed doing a search on the forum.

The prices below are from Camskill (including delivery) - I'm rather surprised that F1s have increased by over 15% in the last 18 months (looking at old posts). Anyone aware of better prices from reputable suppliers?

Of the three tyres you mention, I have lots of experience of Neros on both my M3 CSL and on the RS2 - different sizes of course. On both cars they work really well as they provide good ride comfort,excellent wet weather grip and very forgiving when they get near to their limits. This particular aspect became very clear when I went on the Prodrive M3CSL driver course on their wet skidpan when the object was to find the limits of the car/tyres.
Others would rate the Asymmetrics but you do seem to get variable reports on them. The tyre I am looking forward to trying is the new Michelin Pilot Sport 3 which was announced on Jan 1st. It is currently available only in 225/45/ZR17 91Y or 94W but in July should be available in 94Y XL rating.

Have you really got an s2 on scilly?

I won't be able to wait for the new Michelins as I have 245s on at the moment. I may go for the Neros, as I'm surprised at how good the ride is on the RS2 (currently on Pilot Sport 2s).

You should find that the Neros give an even more comfortable ride than the PS2. I presume you are running 245/40ZR17 91Y Pilot Sport 2 at the moment. You can get PS2 in 225/45ZR17 91Y rating (in fact this is what my current spare tyre is)

Correct. I think I may go for the Pirellis as I'd certainly like to try something new, and I understand the 94 XL is a more appropriate loading.

I had 4x Eagle F1 Asym (225/45/17) fitted at Kwik Fit just before Christmas. Fitted, balanced, nitro fill and wheel alignment for £360, waaay below the rrp! pays to haggle!

Yeah, that is good. I scoured the net for ages when I bought Asyms and eventually ordered from Tyre Traders at £410 all in (fitted, balanced etc). I've found the grip excellent but also had good experiences with Michelin Pilot Sports when I had an E36 M3 Evo...and believe me you need good rubber on that tail happy ragamuffin

I use blackcircles.com you can buy just the tyre or have them fitted at any of their local fitters. You can check the prices before phoning round other dealers.

Can you provide a basic explanation of the difference between 91Y, 94W and XL TL please. I know this is something to do with weight of load but can you be more specific? Thanks

XL stands for Extra Load – or is sometimes referred to as Reinforced. Essentially, tyres bearing this stamp are designed for heavy cars rather than ones that carry big loads. Not only are they constructed to cope with weight, but also the higher tyre pressure these vehicles need to run at. This marking is usually found on lower-profile tyres used on large cars. It highlights the fact they are built to a higher weight rating, as there is nearly always a standard version in the same size in the maker’s range"

The Autoexpress explanation more or less sums it up. The only thing I would add is that in general XL tyres are designed for heavier performance cars. The extra stiffness in the sidewall not only assists with carrying the load but with body roll resistance(handling) and steering response. Both of these aspects are important in a performance car.

Thanks for the tip-off Tom, I'll have a look now.
I'm going through that stage of ownership (I'm presuming many others did) where I'm wondering whether the car's performing optimally, without any accurate reference points, and what may need replacing. The tyres are an obvious one. Now I've got thinking about that DV valve...
