Have you seen the black RS2 on eBay? Looks nice. Looks undervalued.
Currently (2.30 Friday) standing at £8,104 with reserve not met. 20 bids. It's taken two days to struggle up from £8,004 to £8,104.
3 previous owners, 84,000 miles, service history to 71,000.
The auction has two days to go.
There's a humungous path name, so just search on Audi RS2 and it's near the top.

It's on the register unfortunately.
I saw the car when it was first listed and it instantly took my fancy, so I contacted the seller. He told me that it was an insurance loss (uneconomical repair) prior to him owning it.
Reserve is set at 9k if anyone is still interested.

Sold for 9k.
Only thing I couldn't weigh up was his explanation of why the vehicle was written off.
He stated:
I also have to be honest with you and explain that the car has been written off before as an uneconomical repair.New lock set and ecu. I was concerned that it had been stolen and ragged about but have managed to contact the previous owner who assured me that it was never removed from the drive due to the key being mapped to the ecu preventing she car from running.
If it never left the drive and all they replaced was the lock set and ecu, why was it written off?
Anyone on here the winning bidder?

That is so bizarre. Someone spends £9,000 on eBay for one that's been written off, but Angus's straight one is still on Pistonheads for £9,950.
You'd think that would be £950 well spent.

hello - new here and i'm the winning bidder on that black rs2 on ebay - i was going to do a vehicle check on it this week before going to inspect it this weekend but in the light of the above it all seems rather fishy; it's a bit dodgy not to note that it's an insurance write-off in the advert, eh... and there was me getting excited about a new motor; my Benz 500E is up for sale on pistonheads (girlfriend said she wanted "a nice small station wagon" instead, see) and an rs2 is about the only thing i'd swap it for. is it a real no-no to buy an insurance write off then, that one on ebay appealed because of the low mileage and plain colour. oh well. thanks for any advice you can offer on the insurance issue and future purchase of one of these cars. cheers andy

Andy,
To be honest, there are some "written-off" cars that are definitely worth purchasing, and that alone would not stop me buying a car, but as has already been said, the price would have to realistically reflect the fact.
While I am in no way implying that this car shouldn't be bought, I just thought the explanation of why the car had been written-off didn't really add up. To be fair to the seller, he didn't try to hide the fact that the car had been a write-off when asked whether the car was HPI clear. Unfortunately, as a private seller he has no obligation to offer that information freely in his ad.
I guess you have a choice to make once you've had a look at the car, but it may well be worth having it looked over by a specialist if you don't feel competent enough yourself in the light of these facts.
I would still have considered a bid on the car myself if the price had been lower and I had not decided that I have to have a RS blue one!!!

Sorry, I can't offer any suggestions on that one Andy. Perhaps, someone more local could chip in.
It would still be worth running a check against the car to see what it comes back with. I didn't HPI it myself.

i didn't buy the black RS2, no. in fact just i bought another RS2 this afternoon. very similar; same mileage, except silver and in amazing condition. just drove it home and it was awesome, despite most of the journey being London traffic. ho-hum. i told the seller of the black one that anybody buying an RS2 would be a bit of a car nut and as such would definitely check the history of the car and that he really shouldn't waste people's time by not noting in the ad that it's an insurance write-off. clearly he hasn't and is hoping that somebody does one of those £3 vehicle checks which will simply tell them that the current VRM has no history - i.e. the old VRM has the write-off data attached to it. i'm sure it's a decent car but i was after the best example i could find and the fact that it was an insurance write-off just left too many unanswered questions for me.
