fuel consumption on rs2

Post by georgers2 » Sun Jul 20, 2008 9:16 pm

hi, I'm all new here, and new rs2 owner(couple months). can some one tell me real fuel consumptions in the city for rs2? my one uses around 18-19 ltr for 100km. it's much better on motorway around 11-13 ltr. here is the bits what i changed so far:
new bov
new denso ik22 spark plugs
two air leeks found and repaired, system tested after to 1.Bar now leaks.
1 new ignition coil, had crack.
new thermostat.
new air filter
car start and drive OK, hot or cold. i had checked time from 0-100km 5.9s, was expecting a bit less...
i thought it should use much less or it's normal? maybe some one can direct me to common problems on rs2? or it mean welcome to rs2 world! any help will be appreciated.

My take 14 ltr in the city and 10 on the highway, with speed 80-140km/h. Try to clean the maf with some cleaning spray and maybe change lambda. i can't say anything of the spark plugs but people often talk about using the right ones.
I don't think 5.9 is a bad time if its a stock one.

Hi, I am also quite new to the RS2 having bought one in February and have been replacing some of the parts as required.

With mine we have replaced the brake discs and pads, suspension bushes, suspension top mounts and the aircon pipe work.

I'm not a mechanic and I dont work on my car. I have found a very experienced Audi mechanic who has a small independent garage who looks after mine and a few other customers' RS2s.

The underside can be prone to rust and its worth checking underneath to see what needs renewing. We renewed the worn parts and with the rest we rubbed off any rust and then treated it with waxoil which helps prevent any future corrosion.

It's worth also viewing the www.s2forum.com as there is a huge amount of information there as well as here. Read as much as you can and then find a good mechanic!

I havent done a lot of city driving but around a town I would expect maybe 19mpg and on the motorway at a steady 70mph maybe 30 - 33mpg

Hope this helps!

Simon

thanks allot for replay's! i did changed the lambda probe as well just forgot to right it down. (from vag parts) what you use to clean maf sensor? is it a carb spray? just take it out and spray allot of it?
so my one uses about 5-6 ltr. to much... by the way no faults when i plugged in vagcom. to test it. any other suggestions?
i have to sort it out, with today's petrol prices.....

If you really see 30-33mpg let me know !! 18mpg around town about right. On motorway you may see 25-27mpg with a very light right foot. For others experience check this thread http://www.rs246.com/index.php?name=PNp ... onsumption

BTW I did get an MRC remap after this thread which improved the fuel consumption if you resisted the desire to use your right foot too much.
The OEM fuel map is very 'safe' read rich to allow for the varying petrol quality.

I went back to the OEM map as I missed the RS2 boost character :!:

Mine averages 19.3 miles per gallon, which is 14.6 litres per 100 km.

As an experiment on a motorway I found 30 mpg is possible by spending most of the time at 50mph.

I did it once. :D

To get the quickest acceleration from stationary you have to rev to 7,000 and drop the clutch.

It is very brutal and I have yet to meet an owner who has done it. The pleasure of the RS2 for me is the way it gathers speed on the move.

This brings its own hazards. If you are sixth or seventh in a queue and want to overtake, look out for the guy sitting about third in the queue. He won't be expecting you. He certainly won't be expecting you at the speed you're travelling at as you go past.

My car's previous owner warned me about this phenomenon and sure enough it happened. Luckily the road was wide enough to accomodate an overtaking maneouvre three cars wide.

So you are the one who travels at 50mph on the M'way

actaully im the guy going up and down the M1 doing only 70mph!!!
My car has the GT3071R turbo and a remap and averages 12lit/100Kms!!! Usually its around 14-16lit/100Kms in the city though.
If i step on it though.....whole new story.....

cleaned the MAF sensor with carb cleaner today , will see if that helps, but i have not much of optimism that this little clean up will make dramatic changes to fuel consumption. hope so.....

Fuel

My normal driving i.e. short trips and the occasional long one to get it warmed through followed by some classic RS2 on/off boost antics results in 15.1mpg - oh crap! I must break the habit with super at almost 1.30/pg. But add a few morning trips to school with the kids and I can average over 17mpg - excellent!

I've been logging my fuel receipts for the last two years or so. Long term average mixed duty is 19.5 mpg. Can see 260/270 miles per tank.

If I'm in a hurry, or going around town it's easy to see one off tanks running at around 17mpg or less. About 150/200 miles per tank.

I agree, IF driving at the limit of 'efficiency' we can get 30 mpg, although it drives my missus nuts on the rare occasion I try for a personal best!

On the other hand, I've an entire tank go in about 60 miles, 5mpg ish on a track day.... You can see you gauge move, I swear

Years ago I had an XJS V12. Talking in a pub one night with a bloke who also had one I told him my story of allowing an old racing driver to drive it. Long story, but le pilot ancienne managed to get a three speed automatic into reverse at 60. How shall I put this? The gearbox wasn't very well afterwards. But it's an ill wind that blows no one any good and the replacement box improved the fuel consumption from 12 mpg to 18.

The bloke I was talking to contemplated this and announced that his hobby used to be getting the worst fuel consumption he could on his dash read out. The car lived outside and as he worked shifts on the other side of town - somewhere out in the sticks - it never warmed up properly and compensated by consuming huge amounts of fuel.

Leaving home for an early shift found him outside on a winter's morning before 4 with the car frozen solid. He scraped a couple of peep holes in the ice and unceremoniously booted the car across an empty town to work.

He got 1 mpg and proclaimed himself the winner.

You need to remember two things re fuel consumption
1 Remapped MRC cars get better mpg with a light right foot
2 The computer read out is usually pessimistic, mine reads 16mpg instead of a calculated 18mpg

I have replaced all the usual suspects FPR MAF etc with little impact on mpg
