Well we came home with the RS2 today....

The deal was done on the car today and we've just brought it home! I have a couple more questions for you guys though if you don't mind. It's got some non-standard wheels on it, which we've just found out are buckled. Whats the best replacements to get size and fitment wise? My mate was looking to change them anyway so not too worried. Also the car has the uprated brakes on it, what model are they from, think the guy said 968 clubsport? the rears need changing. Also there is excessive handbrake travel I'm hoping we can adjust up? I'll have a look when the discs are off? The auxiliary radiator has loads of fins missing, any ideas of best place for new item? I think we are going to do cambelt and all the auxiliary belts for piece of mind to. If any of you can help out with more info be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Yes, in theory the brakes are 968 CS, but in practice they are the source of endless exchanges on forums about Porsche part numbers because the Audi parts are so expensive. Endless exchanges and few firm answers, sadly.

However, if you pay the Audi prices the problems all go away at the same time. All your worries about the type and size and compatibilty plus all the agro go at a stroke. The handbrake, if it's set up correctly, works fine.

The best alternative, to my mind, is to go to VagParts for the upgrade to the drilled discs and big calipers. This may be what you've got already of course.

eBay for wheels? 17" 7J "Cups" (off the 964?). Then get them refurbed. I had mine done at Elite in Reading. Tom1 has only just had his done and will let you know who did his I feel sure.

I'll dig the history out and see where the previous owner had his rads recored.

All the best

Welcome and congratulations on your purchase

As Dicky said really.

It would be nice to get the OEM Porsche cup wheels (or replicas) back on.

As for the auxiliary radiator, just whip it out and bung up the hoses - my S2 (ABY) actually runs cooler without it!

Cheers guys. For wheel upgrages, will 18's fit nicely or not? We have been looking at the Porsche turbo's in 8x17 et47 which would then take the correct 225/45 17 rubber, but wonder if 18's will go without issues?

Yes, 18s will fit fine - just make sure you get the correct ET and stud pattern (PCD)

If you have no joy with looking for heels, try Simon Butterworth at Porshce-apart. They should be able to source and provide refurbed genuine 7x17" wheels. Will probably take your old ones in P.ex too.

Also read Tom1's Wheel Refurb post as it has a bit about tyres. The long and short of it is: 225s not 245s.

Just going back to the brakes and the Porsche/Audi confusion, I bet if you had a 968 and went to Porsche for brake parts they'd ask you about the year and the VIN and your mum's co-op number. It's no wonder it's not straightforward.

The issue about the Big Reds 322x32 front brakes it's always trendy......

Disc Brakes from Audi come for a ludicrous price.... about 400 euros each!!

I went for the 322x32 of the 964 3.6 liter Turbo payed them around 150 euros each
The difference it's that mines are one solid block and not rotor and holder in two pices like the Audi ones or 993 Porsche ones
Apart for that they're cross drilled and they work just perfectly.... far better then the originals 304mm

Calipers for Big Reds... the most convenient place for it it's EBay.de usually they are around 600/700 euros for the couple brand new

Stefano

P.S.
Handbrake.............. it's the worse piece of Porsche engineering in the RS2
It does'nt hold the car on a nrmal slope.... and that's very well known.
Spare parts for it again are very expensive

I'm worried that taking out the aux rad would not be the best hting to do in Italian summer......
IMHO if the thing it's fitted there must be a reason.

In an Italian summer maybe not. But a few people over here have told me to just bin it

for the handbrake, get the 2 cables that work with the rear pads of the drum of the handbrake(around 100euros both),then have the handbrake pads resurfaced and tighten everything up.Make it go up to 2 clicks to hold everything and that should last about a year before it needs tightening again.Mine has worked nicely, but in any case you never trust an RS2's handbrake...put in that gear...it needs it!
