rs2 and LPG

Post by veg » Thu Feb 08, 2007 12:36 am

Hi All,

recently joined the site having found the address in a car mag.

I've always been an Audi man and would love an RS2. I hope I'm not swearing by asking this question but has anyone done an lpg conversion on one? I'd probably need to use it as an every day car. Currently driving a A3 2.0 TDI sport you can see why fuel consumption is of concern. While i don't expect comparable figures, a conversion might go some way to softening the blow!

Any advise Appreciated

Cheers,

VEG

You are kidding ? I have never heard of anyone, anywhere doing an LPG conversion. If fuel costs are a real concern then I suspect the RS2 is not for you. You can run an unmapped car on standard 95RON unleaded with a reduction in power and mpg. Mixed conditions around 20mpg (falling to 15ish city rising to 24ish all motorway).
Why not keep the TDI and enjoy an RS2 as intended
Finally if you look at whole lifetime costs then fuel consumption is compensated for by slow depreciation with a well maintained car. This last issue is vital.

i've not come across it on an RS2..... sounds like car murder to me ;) ...... but there's a few RS6s and B5 RS4s that have had it done IIRC. so maybe it is possible...... but as alastair says, it is rather missing the whole point of an RS2.....

plus, maintaining these cars is generally not exactly the cheapest. they are, after all, 12-13 years old now. most owners can proudly relate the many thousands of pounds-worth of bills they have for keeping their cars in tip-top condition. next to that, an extra 10 quid per 100 miles of motoring is gonna look like a bargain! ;)

just my 2p.......

Thanks for taking time out to reply fellas. Good points well made!

I'm sure i read somewhere that conversion is not recommended for high mileage cars. However, isn't lpg meant to burn cleaner than petrol so wouldn't that mean less wear on the engine etc?

Depends really, these cars are very very well made and its all down to regular and good maintenance. My S2 is RS2 spec and has 236k on it and its still going strong.

I think it is best left as is, buy yourself a cheaper diesel and use the RS2 at weekends, you won't regret it.

Cheers,
