Window sometimes lazy

Post by LHD » Tue Jan 23, 2007 2:52 pm

The drivers side window on my car sometimes refuses to go all the way up. I have to leave it for a bit then press the button again and up it goes, sometimes stopping again before reaching the fully closed position. It doesn't do this all the time and my first thought were that it is the well known relay problem. Surely though this would affect all 4 windows?

Has anyone had the same experience? I've discounted the switch/wiring as I tried switching it with the rears and it did exactly the same thing. I'd like to get this fixed ASAP so save me a visit to my local Audi stealers please and give me the benefit of your

Also does anyone know the location of the window relay on a LHD car? I know on a RHD car it's below the steering wheel but having looked below the wheel on mine there is nothing obvious that might house the relays.

If you don't have any joy on here, try S2 forum. Plenty of clever chaps on there.

Lazy Windows

Post by Nick » Sat Jan 27, 2007 10:57 pm

I had a problem with my car in that the drivers window would refuse to go down at all. It was fairy intermittent, sometimes it would be fine for a week or so then play up in the morning only to be ok when I drove home.
Normally ok to go up but then again it was always paying at car parks etc so if it did go down it was back up seconds later...never left it open for long just in case!
Anyway, I found one of the relay modules to be faulty, it was caused by some dry joints on the control board...once resoldered worked like a dream. If this sounds like it could be your problem then I could pull off the covers again to check the module no and maybe photo the offending board / joints?

hello. i bought my RS2 yesterday and the passenger electric window only goes down but not up, i've tried changing the switch with no luck, taken out the relay and put it back in case it was a dodgy connection but it's still only going down. i am now getting slightly panicked as my car is parked on the street and i am unable to close the window. help. can i simply connect across a couple of wires in the switch to fix it temporarily before taking it to a dealer tomorrow? please help - i can't leave the window open all night...

no - in the end i've just removed the doorcard, disconnected the motor and jammed the window closed. clearly not a viable long term solution... how can i test to see if the motor is faulty?

Does the RS2 have the total closure function on the key?
ie when you lock the door with the key and hold the key in the lock position, do the windows and sunroof auto close?

It may be worth checking whether you could close them this way, as the lock sends a signal directly to the window closer module and that puts the feed directly onto the motor ignoring the switches I think.

Are you sure about that fella?

I'm sure if it has total open, it should have total close too. (It's a while since I worked in the car audio/security trade but that seems to stick in my mind)

Wouldn't be he first time I'd been wrong though - just ask my wife!!

Most VAG cars have either both or neither, I just wasn't sure what year they started installing it.

its an old car,and it has been discussed quite a bit over on s2forum about retrofitting total open+close on the RS2 and it is not an easy task.
definitelly it only has a total open.

AFAIK the RS2 (at least mine) does'nt have the total open neither the total close....
I had my windows with problems few months ago: simply the lights on the doors switches use to go off and all windows did'nt make any move.... all dead.
Then after a while the lights where use to turn on and thinhs restart to work properly.
I changed the "ECU" of the windows and...... done! No more problems.
Part No on my Bible version (old) is 443959257B
The part No has been changed but with this old number you can still order the part that will come with a different No

you mean the relay, the big one.I have occasionally the same problem and it may also be due to a small fuse under that big relay.Didnt make any difference when i changed the fuse though,so i changed the relay myself. So far it hasnt done it before,so we'll see...

hello. 2 weeks into otherwise fantastic RS2 ownership and i am still having problems with my passenger side electric window... having checked the motor works both ways by hard-wiring it (it does) i bought both a new passenger door switch and a new relay and it's still doing the same thing. aargh. any ideas? could it be the switch on the driver's door panel maybe? that's the only thing i haven't checked. or wiring somewhere? how do i check?

and since i replaced a few blown dashboard lights my airbag light now comes on for a few minutes when i switch the ignition on - how do i get it to stay off, assuming of course that there isn't actually a problem with the airbag.

also i think the offside CV joint is on its way out, makes a faint clicking noise, especially when it's warm, changing this on the street might be a bit of a challenge so can anybody suggest a good independent audi specialist in Central / East London that i can take it to? my brakes are binding a bit, again worst when warm, so i'm assuming i've got some corrosion build-up that also needs sorting so i want to take it somewhere that knows about these cars.

thanks
